The Washington Nationals recalled right-handed pitcher James Bourque from Double-A Harrisburg and optioned right-handed pitcher Joe Ross to Triple-A Fresno on Saturday. Additionally, the Nationals recalled from rehab assignment and optioned outfielder Andrew Stevenson to Triple-A Fresno. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcements.
Bourque, 25, went 3-0 with six saves and a 1.33 ERA (3 ER/20.1 IP) in 14 appearances out of Harrisburg's...
Nobody would try to claim the Nationals solved all of their woes last night during a wild 12-10 victory over the Marlins. As Davey Martinez disgruntledly explained afterward, his team still played sloppy in the field and got plenty of shaky work out of its bullpen. So the season is hardly saved.
But a win's a win, and the Nationals certainly need all they can get right now. Plus, there are some legitimately encouraging signs. Juan Soto is on a tear, going 15-for-30 with eight extra-base hits....
It has been a little over two weeks since my trek to Salisbury, Md. and Perdue Stadium to see up close how the Orioles' Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds affiliate had gotten off to a remarkable 24-4 start.
The Shorebirds were playing at a .857 winning percentage through 28 games and they were obviously going to cool off some. But it hasn't been much. After last night's 12-2 home win over Lakewood, the Shorebirds are 36-10 (.783).
That is still easily the best-record in all of minor league full...
DENVER - Chris Davis' name was missing from the Orioles lineup in last night's series opener against the Rockies and his removal versus a right-handed starter, in this case Jeff Hoffman, serves as a sharp indicator that another reset is underway.
Davis also expects to sit tonight with the Rockies sending left-hander Kyle Freeland to the mound. But he won't be idle, his work continuing with hitting coach Don Long as they try to find a solution.
Manager Brandon Hyde put Trey Mancini at first...
In a back-and-forth game there for the taking, the Nationals needed their big hitters to come through in clutch moments and help break a season-long five-game losing streak.
The Nats came back three times Friday night to find a way to win 12-10 over the Marlins thanks in large part to their big hitters.
Adam Eaton and Anthony Rendon hit homers to help the Nats come back from early 2-0 and 4-2 deficits.
Down 8-4, the Nats chipped away with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Then Victor...
It wasn't the prettiest of games, but the way things have gone this last week, the Nationals will take it.
Juan Soto's three-run homer and Matt Adams' solo shot highlighted a four-run eighth inning as the Nats came back from an 8-4 deficit to win 12-10 over the Marlins, their first victory in a series opener at home this season.
The Nationals allowed 15 hits, 10 runs, hit two batters and committed four errors. Yet they continually chipped away at early deficits and eventually took the lead...
DENVER - Keon Broxton just wants to have fun. And if a man can't enjoy a 474-foot home run on the first pitch thrown to him on his new team, well, there's something truly wrong in the baseball world.
Broxton was all smiles as he crossed home plate tonight and turned toward the Orioles dugout, knowing the enthusiastic reception that waited for him. Rio Ruiz got to him first behind home plate, scoring after drawing a leadoff walk and giving Broxton an affectionate slap on the helmet.
The high...
Trying to snap a season-long six-game losing streak, the Orioles are in Colorado for a three-game weekend series. The Orioles were swept at home in a four-game series by the New York Yankees that ended yesterday. After this quick one-series road trip, they'll be back at home Monday afternoon.
This series marks just the second trip for the Orioles to Coors Field in Colorado. The O's only other visit to the park came in June 2004. The Orioles lost the first two games of that series, then won...
Manager Davey Martinez updated the status of right-hander AnÃbal Sánchez, who is on the injured list recovering from a left hamstring strain.
"He threw a sim game," Martinez said. "Forty-one pitches, went really well. He ran after he threw. Next hurdle will be he will throw a side and then we will reevaluate then.
"Before he comes back he's got to do PFPs (pitchers' fielding practice), cover first, do the whole gamut, because it was a hamstring issue so we want to make sure he is...
DENVER - The Orioles are moving Dan Straily to the bullpen.
Straily would have started Monday afternoon against the Tigers at Camden Yards, but the spot is listed as TBD. Manager Brandon Hyde said the replacement will be announced prior to Saturday's game.
This is the latest reset employed by the Orioles, who are hoping that Straily can work out his issues away from the rotation and narrow his focus and workload.
Straily needs to thin out an ERA that's grown to 9.09 and a 1.990 WHIP built...
