Matusz trying to make comeback via independent league
Matusz trying to make comeback via independent league

Brian Matusz can't really explain it. The former Orioles first-round draft pick needed some time away from baseball and couldn't get back into it. Couldn't find a team willing to take a chance on a 32-year-old left-hander with starting and bullpen experience who had some success in the majors. Left-handed and breathing usually gets you a phone call. Matusz decided that he wanted it to ring and was met with the sounds of silence. So where is he now? A Yankees writer posed the question to me...

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde wouldn't go into much detail about his dugout confrontation with first baseman Chris Davis that slapped another ugly coat on a 14-2 loss to the Yankees at Camden Yards. Hyde said he wanted to keep it private and would speak with Davis later. He also expressed remorse that it happened in view of the public, including media, and downplayed the impact it would have on his relationship with Davis and the season. Davis apparently left the ballpark and wasn't available...

What seemed headed for a game ending with another blowout win for the New York Yankees over the Orioles, the game took another turn at the end of the top of the fifth inning tonight. The MASN cameras caught Chris Davis directing some heated words in what appeared to be the direction of Orioles manager Brandon Hyde. As to why this occurred, we don't have that answer yet. But Davis was being restrained by hitting coach Don Long and injured Oriole Mark Trumbo for several seconds before he went...

The first public blowup of the Orioles 2019 season played out in the dugout tonight after the top of the fifth inning. A MASN camera caught hitting coach Don Long and injured outfielder Mark Trumbo restraining Chris Davis from going after manager Brandon Hyde. Jace Peterson pinch-hit for Davis in the bottom of the fifth and grounded out. Hyde appeared to say something to Davis while headed down the tunnel and Davis bolted after him. Long and Trumbo moved him back and Jonathan Villar also made...

SAN FRANCISCO - As the bottom of the ninth played out Wednesday afternoon at Oracle Park, the Giants getting an RBI double from Brandon Crawford and suddenly threatening to make things interesting, Davey Martinez might have been tempted to send Sean Doolittle or Fernando Rodney down to the bullpen to start warming up. Only a week or two ago, that's probably what would've happened. If a game was close late, Martinez would have felt compelled to at least warm up his closer or primary backup,...

SAN FRANCISCO - They arrived in the cool Bay Area late Sunday night having just gotten smoked in the Arizona desert, losers of three straight series for the first time in three months. The Nationals needed a bounceback week against a Giants club trying to mount a surprising run at a wild card berth. That's exactly what they got. With a pair of shutout wins orchestrated by the supposedly weak back end of their rotation, the Nationals swept the Giants, thanks to today's 4-1 victory, and headed...

In the first two games of this series, the New York Yankees have 23 hits, including 11 homers and have beaten the Orioles 9-6 and 9-4. They go for a three-game series sweep tonight at Camden Yards. Since the Orioles took two of three at Yankee Stadium in the first series of the season, New York has swept the O's in series of three, two and four games. They'll try to add to that tonight. The Orioles are 2-12 versus the Yankees and have lost 11 in a row in the season series. They have lost 14...

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said DJ Stewart remains under concussion protocol after going on the seven-day injured list today, the result of last night's fly ball that smashed into the outfielder's left temple. He isn't sure how long Stewart will be out. "Hopefully he checks all the boxes coming up soon and we're able to activate him at some point after the seven days," Hyde said. Hyde explained why he kept Stewart in left field for the rest of the inning before sending up Jace Peterson...

SAN FRANCISCO - Double-A Harrisburg pitcher Steven Fuentes has been suspended 50 games after testing positive for a stimulant in violation of the minor league drug prevention and treatment program. Fuentes, rated the organization's 21st best prospect by MLB Pipeline, tested positive for the stimulant Heptaminol, Major League Baseball announced this afternoon. The 22-year-old right-hander was signed by the Nationals out of Panama in 2013 and has slowly climbed his way up the organizational...

On July 12, the first day after the All-Star break, the New York Mets lost 8-4 to Miami and their record dropped to 40-51, making them a team that most thought would hit the trade market as a seller as the July 31 deadline arrived. Pitchers Zack Wheeler and Noah Syndergaard were going to be on the move. That would give the Mets a chance to make up for the disastrous offseason acquisitions of Robinson Canó, who wasn't hitting and is on the injured list, and closer Edwin Díaz, who...
