In a season filled with inconsistencies, Max Scherzer was one of the Nationals' constants. But in the dog days of summer, even the once-dominant right-hander is floundering.
The Giants attacked Scherzer for six runs on seven hits in just three innings Friday night as the Nationals fell 8-5 for their fourth straight loss.
"The last couple times out, it hasn't been his best," Nationals manager Matt Williams told reporters. "I just felt like he wasn't throwing it where he wanted to and left...
So in their first game after being no-hit, the Orioles scored eight runs on 16 hits and hit three home runs. In their first game after pitching the no-hitter, the Seattle Mariners allowed 15 runs on 21 hits. The Mariners are the first team to allow 15 or more runs in the first game following a no-hitter since the 1905 Red Sox.
So, yeah, baseball.
Of the six relief pitchers the Orioles used last night, the only one that gave up any runs was closer Zach Britton. Yep, baseball. You can't explain...
Here are some clubhouse quotes after the Orioles' marathon 8-6 win in 13 innings over the Oakland A's. Manny Machado hit the game-winning two-run homer in the 13th to end the 4-hour, 27-minute game.
Machado, Chris Davis and Adam Jones went 8-for-17 tonight with three homers and all eight RBIs.
It was Machado's second career walk-off homer. He hit one on July 29, 2014 against the Angels. It was the Orioles' fourth walk-off homer of the year. David Lough, Jonathan Schoop and Matt Wieters hit...
Who's ready for another roster move?
Outfielder Henry Urrutia will be recalled today after spending yesterday on the taxi squad. A spot must be created for him.
Junior Lake, who doubled in six at-bats last night and is 2-for-14, has a minor league option, but it doesn't guarantee his removal. It's just an easier avenue to take if the Orioles choose it.
Plenty of guys are slumping.
Jimmy Paredes struck out in both at-bats last night after pinch-hitting for Nolan Reimold, who was 2-for-4....
Orioles manager Buck Showalter provided the reminder.
"It would be easy to forget we were down 4-0 in that game," he said.
Oh, yeah, right. Then came the three-run homer by Adam Jones in the fifth inning after Junior Lake's double and Gerardo Parra's hit by pitch. And Chris Davis' two-run homer in the seventh after Adam Jones' sacrifice fly to center field. And a blown save by Zach Britton on two infield hits and Danny Valencia's ground ball single into right field. And Rule 5 pick Jason...
It took awhile, but the Orioles finally beat the Oakland A's on Friday night, right before it turned into Saturday morning.
Manny Machado's two-run homer to left provided the Orioles an 8-6 win in 13 innings. It was Machado's second career walk-off homer and his 25th home run of the season. With one out in the 13th, Caleb Joseph doubled off Drew Pomeranz and right-hander Aaron Brooks came on for Oakland to face Machado. He lined an 0-1 pitch into the left field seats to end the game that...
So far, so good for Nationals manager Matt Williams' lineup changes.
The reconfigured batting order provided right-hander Max Scherzer a 1-0 lead before he even took the mound tonight at AT&T Park. The Nationals are hoping to break a three-game losing streak and even the series in San Francisco.
Leadoff man Michael A. Taylor drew a walk from Matt Cain and stole second. Yunel Escobar's sacrifice bunt moved Taylor to third and Bryce Harper's sacrifice fly to deep right field got him in,...
Outfielder Andrew Stevenson has already been promoted from short-season Single-A Auburn to low Single-A Hagerstown.
The 2015 second-round selection from Louisiana State played in the College World Series and gained valuable experience by playing for a top-flight collegiate program in the Southeastern Conference. The SEC had four teams earn trips to the College World Series in Omaha to start this summer (LSU, Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Florida).
Stevenson was already a highly rated centerfield...
Ubaldo Jimenez needed only 12 pitches tonight to retire the Athletics in order in the top of the first inning. He struck out Josh Reddick to end it.
Gary Roenicke and Melvin Mora received standing ovations when introduced during the Orioles Hall of Fame ceremony. Mora threw out the ceremonial first pitch to Gerardo Parra, his former teammate in Arizona, and Roenicke threw to Jimmy Paredes.
Yes, Paredes has a glove. Everyone's a comedian.
Mora introduced his family before starting his speech,...
I omitted a health update in my last entry. Pitcher Mike Wright, on the disabled list with a strained left calf muscle, remains tentative running and pushing off, according to manager Buck Showalter. The Orioles will bring him along slowly as he rehabs down in Sarasota.
"I thought that was moving pretty quick," Showalter said, "but I've been told to be a little cautious with him and take that tentativeness away."
The Orioles have promoted catcher Chance Sisco from Single-A Frederick to...
