The Orioles have placed pitcher Miguel Gonzalez on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to yesterday with a strained right groin muscle and recalled pitcher Mike Wright from Triple-A Norfolk. Wright gives the Orioles a seventh reliever, and he will start on Sunday if not needed out of the bullpen. Wright, 25, became the second Orioles starter in club history to begin his major league career with two consecutive scoreless starts - Tom Phoebus also did it on September 15-20, 1966 - after tossing...

In hopes of bolstering the backend of their bullpen, the Nationals made a move by acquiring right-hander David Carpenter from the New York Yankees this morning in exchange for minor league infielder Tony Renda. The 29-year-old Carpenter pitched to a 4.82 ERA over 18 1/3 innings in 22 appearances for the Yankees this year. He was designated for assignment by New York on June 3. Carpenter has compiled an 11-11 record with a 3.73 ERA in five seasons with Astros, Blue Jays, Braves and Yankees....

With the Nationals playing the New York Yankees, one of the big storylines was Bryce Harper playing his first games in new Yankees Stadium. This is a story because Harper grew up a Yankees fan, his favorite player is Mickey Mantle and he even wears No. 34 because three plus four equals seven, Mickey Mantle's number. These facts lead to an assumption that when Harper becomes a free agent after the 2018 season that he is destined to become a Yankee. This assumption ignores many factors that are...

Nationals manager Matt Williams told reporters after yesterday's 5-4 win that he had to figure a way to keep Danny Espinosa's bat in the lineup. His saying that is understandable after the six-year veteran went 3-for-5 with a homer, a double, a RBI and two runs scored. His eight home runs are secon- best on the Nationals as is his .842 OPS. But Espinosa is seemingly the odd man out of the Nats infield with Anthony Rendon's return. Williams could experiment with Espinosa in left field. The...

Another First-Year Player Draft is in the books for the Orioles. They selected 41 players over the last three days - 21 position players and 20 pitchers. So overall, the Orioles drafted 29 college players and 12 from high schools. They selected 13 right-handed pitchers, seven left-handers, eight infielders, eight outfielders, four catchers, and one...

After an All-Star-caliber performance in which he recorded a league-high 51 saves 2012, Jim Johnson scuffled the next season. The Orioles closer still managed 50 saves, but blew nine along the way and the Birds finished 6 1/2 games out of the wild card. Johnson allowed two more hits per nine innings in 2013, as a result recording a 9.75 ERA over 12 innings in May of that season. Johnson's success in the ninth inning was predicated on the success of his sinker. Unlike most closers, he relied on...

Reporters have seen it before: Orioles outfielder Adam Jones just does not provide lengthy answers when describing his own play. So it was tonight when he was asked about a couple of excellent defensive catches he made in the outfield, including the flat-out dive to rob Mookie Betts in the fifth inning of the Orioles' 5-2 win over Boston. Did he think he would make that catch? "Never know until you catch it," he said simply. He had a slightly longer answer - but not by much - when he talked...
