SARASOTA, Fla. - Less than two weeks remain before opening day and there are still so many questions regarding the composition of the Orioles' 25-man roster.
One complication arises from the one game remaining on first baseman Chris Davis' suspension. Manager Buck Showalter seems intrigued by the idea of carrying a player who's out of minor league options, then attempting to sneak him through waivers while other teams already have set their rosters.
Could this be a strategy with Jimmy...
NATIONALS QUICK WRAP
Score: Mets 8, Nats 3
Recap: Gio Gonzalez pitched five scoreless innings, allowing only two hits with three walks and five strikeouts. The Nats finally got on the board in the sixth on a pair of doubles from center fielder Michael A. Taylor and right fielder Clint Robinson. First baseman Ryan Zimmerman followed with a single and the Nats scored all three runs during a two-out rally to pull ahead 3-1. But the Mets scored seven runs over the last three innings to erase the...
During my time in Sarasota, I asked Orioles center fielder Adam Jones what he would need to get done for this to be a successful spring training for him.
"Injury-free. It's a successful spring training no matter who you are if you get through it without injuries," he said.
Point made. While spring training results may be important for players fighting for roster spots or young players looking to leave the coaching staff with a good impression, the veterans just need to, as they say, "get...
LAKELAND, Fla. - Victor Martinez's long two-run homer off Kevin Gausman in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the Tigers a 6-4 win over the Orioles at Joker Marchant Stadium.
Jayson Nix had tied the game 4-4 with a home run in the top half of the inning.
Gausman struck out two batters in his only inning. Afterward, manager Buck Showalter said the club will shorten him up in case he's assigned to the bullpen.
"Might bring Gaus back shorter until everything shakes out," Showalter said. "I...
VIERA, Fla. - Bryce Harper will not be in right field for the second straight game when the Nationals take on the Mets today. The 22-year-old has been dealing with a stomach virus according to manager Matt Williams.
"He was really feeling bad yesterday and then today he's still not feeling well," said Williams. "He did a little bit of light swinging in the cage. He's still not feeling good so we sent him home today. He could be OK to go tomorrow. We wanted to get him out of here and not...
ORIOLES QUICK WRAP
Score: Tigers 6, Orioles 4
Recap: Chris Tillman turned in the longest outing by an Orioles starter this spring, going 5 1/3 innings and allowing two runs and five hits. He walked one and struck out four. Tillman threw 70 pitches, 45 for strikes. Tommy Hunter served up two home runs in 1 2/3 innings. Delmon Young had a two-run triple in the fourth and Nolan Reimold added a sacrifice fly. Jayson Nix tied the game 4-4 with a home run in the eighth. Kevin Gausman pitched the...
VIERA, Fla. - Today's starting left fielder, Tyler Moore, was the story early in the exhibition season as extra-base hits were flying off his bat. His scorching spring has been overshadowed the past two weeks by a series of injuries facing Nationals starters. As we approach the home stretch of spring training, Moore's has a .351 average with three homers, seven doubles, a triple and eight RBIs in 15 Grapefruit League games.
The 28-year-old Moore showed up at camp out of options and needing to...
LAKELAND, Fla. - Catcher Matt Wieters will return to Sarasota for workouts after joining the Orioles for the three-game series against the Rays at Tropicana Field that opens the 2015 season.
The Orioles want Wieters to eventually begin playing in extended spring training games while he's on the disabled list. The plan also calls for him to play his rehab games at Double-A Bowie and Single-A Frederick and report each day to the Camden Yards clubhouse.
Manager Buck Showalter said Wieters will do...
The Nationals will commemorate memorable home runs at Nationals Park, similar to the way Frank Howard's mammoth blasts to the upper deck at RFK Stadium were signified by seats painted white where the ball hit, according to those attending an invitation-only event at Nationals Park on Tuesday night.
There will be five initial dramatic home runs that will be honored with specially painted seats in the Nationals Park outfield. They are:
* March 30, 2008 - Ryan Zimmerman walk-off home run * July...
LAKELAND, Fla. - Second baseman Jonathan Schoop said he should be able to play Friday against the Rays in Sarasota after having two teeth extracted yesterday.
"I have to get a workout in today and I'm ready to go," said Schoop, who's 9-for-37 (.243) with two doubles, two home runs and six RBIs. "I feel good. No pain, but the doctor didn't want me to run around yesterday. I think today if I run I could bleed, but I feel good. I'm thankful. I feel ready to go." Schoop had one wisdom...
