VIERA, Fla. - Right-hander Blake Treinen earned a save last night by pitching a perfect ninth inning to protect the Nationals' 5-4 lead for their first win of the Grapefruit League season. The 26-year-old recalled finishing three Nationals wins last year, but none of them were tight games.
"It's just fun to come in and shut the door," Treinen said. "Whether it's the guy in before you has a couple guys on and needs you to come in and help him, that's always a blast to be relied on in...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Chris Davis had a pretty good idea what was coming tonight when he launched a three-run homer in the bottom of the third inning to break a scoreless tie.
Manny Machado and Adam Jones singled. Davis stepped to the plate against Blue Jays right-hander Chad Jenkins with two outs. He worked the count to 2-0 and let it rip.
"It was a fastball, I was looking for a fastball and the other two pitches were fastballs, so pretty consistent," he said after the Orioles' 5-0 win over the...
VIERA, Fla. - Nationals manager Matt Williams was pleased with what he saw from starter Max Scherzer in his first game action of the Grapefruit League season.
"Good velocity, pounded the strike zone," said Williams. "He got behind and gave up a homer. But other than that, he was good."
Williams had Scherzer on a two-inning, 45 pitch limit heading into tonight's game against the Mets. Scherzer completed the first two innings of the game in 29 pitches, 20 of which were strikes. He gave up...

SARASOTA, Fla. - Executive vice president Dan Duquette said pitcher Suk-min Yoon's camp contacted the Orioles about a month ago with a request to release him from the remainder of his contract.
The Orioles obliged today, and in return, Yoon released the Orioles from any further financial obligation. The club saved $4.3 million, according to an industry source.
"He was one of the top pitchers in Korea before he came here, and he wanted the opportunity to go there and pitch," Duquette said....
This is going to be a very different First-Year Player Draft for scouting director Gary Rajsich and his staff. The Orioles have more picks early in the draft and are allotted more money to spend in their bonus pool from MLB.
After not having a selection last year until the 90th overall pick, which came in the third round, now the Orioles have five of the first 102 picks.
They will select No. 25 overall in the first round, No. 36 overall (compensation for losing Nelson Cruz), No. 68 in the...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Michael Almanzar hit a tie-breaking home run today in the top of the ninth inning, and the Orioles registered their first spring win, 3-2 over the Rays in Port Charlotte.
Mike Yastrzemski added a sacrifice fly. The Rays scored a run in the bottom of the ninth off Daniel Rodriguez.
If you had Rodriguez earning the Orioles' first save this spring, go directly to the window and pick up your money.
Pitcher Suk-min Yoon has reached agreement on a contract with Kia, his former team...
VIERA, Fla. - Yunel Escobar has been scratched from today's Grapefruit League opener with what the team is calling "general soreness." Escobar was due to make his first appearance in a Nationals uniform in a game today after coming to Washington from the A's in a trade in mid-January.
Kevin Frandsen, who was originally slated to serve as the designated hitter and hit ninth, will replace Escobar at second base, with Mike Carp taking over as the DH and batting seventh.
The Nats expect Escobar...
