The Orioles today announced that they have recalled catcher Steve Clevenger from Triple-A Norfolk and optioned right-hander Miguel Gonzalez to the Tides.
Clevenger, 28, has batted .328/.378/.458 in 36 games with Norfolk after batting .243/.300/.378 in 24 games for the Orioles earlier this season.
Gonzalez, 30, has gone 4-5 with a 4.04 ERA (89.0IP, 40ER) in 16 games (15 starts) for the Orioles.
Steve Clevenger is inside the Orioles clubhouse today and he's listed among the reserves for their game against the Yankees at Camden Yards.
Caleb Joseph also will be on the bench. He says he's fine physically. No injury.
The Orioles haven't announced any roster moves, but Clevenger will be recalled.
Chris Tillman, bumped up a day to replace injured starter Ubaldo Jimenez, is 5-4 with a 5.83 ERA in 11 career games against the Yankees. He tossed seven scoreless innings on June 22 in the...
PHILADELPHIA - The Nationals are optimistic that Jordan Zimmermann's injury is nothing serious.
Zimmermann has been through a serious elbow injury before, and he seems confident that this isn't a similar type of situation.
Still, until the MRI on Zimmermann's right arm comes back today, Nats fans have a right to be nervous.
The Nats hoped for the best with Wilson Ramos on opening day, when initial X-rays didn't show the broken hamate bone. It wasn't announced that Bryce Harper had torn a...
The Orioles are making another roster move today, recalling catcher Steve Clevenger from Triple-A Norfolk. He's expected in uniform for today's game against the Yankees at Camden Yards.
No word on the corresponding move. The Orioles could send out another pitcher before the All-Star break, as they did with Bud Norris on Thursday.
Nick Hundley started behind the plate last night and delivered a walk-off single in the 10th inning.
Manager Buck Showalter chose not to send up a pinch-hitter,...
There is hot. And then there is Steven Souza Jr.
Somebody please cast him in the "Fantastic Four: Part II" as the Human Torch.
The Nats Twitter world (thanks @jimatwitt) talks about him a lot and his statistics don't lie.
In the last 10 games at Triple-A Syracuse, Souza is hitting .475 (19-for-40) with six doubles, one triple, two homers, six stolen bases and 14 RBIs.
For the season, Souza is hitting .371 in 72 games with 20 doubles, two triples, 21 stolen bases, 13 homers and 60 RBIs.
He...
When Jim Gentile was traded from the Los Angeles Dodgers to the Orioles before the 1960 season, he came with a money-back guarantee. Yes, that's correct - a money-back guarantee.
The Orioles gave the Dodgers two players and $50,000 for Gentile, and if the Orioles weren't happy with the deal, they could return him after 30 days and get $25,000 back. Apparently, no questions asked.
Gentile, who had impressive power numbers as a minor league first baseman, didn't hit in his first Orioles...
The Orioles are assured of being in first place at the All-Star break.
Having fun yet?
This team is 33-12 in extra-inning games since the start of the 2012 season. Manager Buck Showalter jokes that if the Orioles were really good, they'd win more games in regulation. But there's something special about consistently coming out on top past regulation.
Darren O'Day has the lowest ERA among American League relievers at 1.11 and he's not going to the All-Star Game.
AL manager John Farrell needed...
If a team's baseball field was several inches under water one day, could they play a doubleheader there the next day?
They could and they did in Norfolk. Harbor Park, the home of the Orioles' Triple-A affiliate, the Norfolk Tides, was under water on Thursday afternoon after torrential rain and the game got rained out. Last night, they played a doubleheader there and the Tides have two more games scheduled tonight beginning at 5:05 p.m. against Gwinnett.
You may have seen some of the pictures...
When Nick Hundley was due up tonight with a man on second and one out in the last of the 10th, the Orioles could have gone to a pinch-hitter. But manager Buck Showalter stayed with Hundley and he delivered an RBI single to give the Orioles a 3-2 win over the Yankees.
Hundley said he wasn't thinking he would be pinch-hit for in that spot.
"I expect to hit in those situations all the time," he said. "I don't think about that stuff. Those decisions are beyond my control. I want to be in the...
PHILADELPHIA - Tonight's 6-2 loss to the Phillies stings because the Nationals missed an opportunity to move back to a game ahead of the Braves in the National League East.
But the bigger issue at this point is the injury to Jordan Zimmermann.
Zimmermann and Matt Williams indicated after the game that they're fairly confident that the biceps cramp that Zimmermann felt tonight isn't an indication that there is any structural issue with the right-hander's elbow or shoulder, but an MRI...
