Hearing from Williams, Strasburg and Ramos after Nats' 7-6 loss
Hearing from Williams, Strasburg and Ramos after Nats' 7-6 loss

This was very nearly the Nationals' biggest comeback of the season, a comeback that could've delivered a blow to their top division rival both psychologically and in the standings. Instead, it goes down as a 7-6 loss. The Nats trailed 6-0 after two innings and 7-0 after five, but clawed back to within one thanks largely to Anthony Rendon's three-run homer and Wilson Ramos' solo shot. They were unable to complete the comeback, however, and they see their division lead drop to 3 1/2 games...

Last night, the Orioles posted their first home win over the Cardinals in franchise history. They hit six home runs. They hit multiple homers off three different pitchers for only the second time. They sat their red-hot catcher, Caleb Joseph, and his replacement collected three hits. It was that kind of night. It's been that kind of season. Nick Hundley didn't garner much attention, but I'm certain that he understood. It was all about the long ball and reconnecting with legends from the...

The Nationals' roster may have suffered another hit this evening in Atlanta. In the second inning, right fielder Steven Souza Jr., who was filling in for Jayson Werth, attempted to catch Freddie Freeman's two-run homer. Instead Souza slammed into the right field wall which is actually a chain link fence. Souza stayed in the game through the bottom of the inning, but was removed in the top of the third for Kevin Frandsen, due to shoulder inflammation. After the game manager Matt Williams...

Chris Tillman said it well in one sentence during his postgame interview. "It was a good night to do what we did," he said after the Orioles' 12-2 win over St. Louis. The Orioles put on a great show tonight for the crowd and for the 23 Orioles Hall of Famers that returned as part of the 60th anniversary celebration tonight. They were introduced during an amazing postgame ceremony. It ended with the 2014 Orioles joining the former O's on the field. Yes, it was amazing. "With all these...

The lights are turned off in the press box tonight as the 60th anniversary celebration takes place on the field. I'm typing this blog entry in the dark. Forgive the typos. As usual. As the Orioles walked off the field following their 12-2 win over the Cardinals, they were greeted by a special group of ex-players. "I've still got chills," said manager Buck Showalter. "We all just came up the runway and all the Hall of Famers are greeting our guys as they come off the field. That was...

For only the second time in franchise history, the Orioles have hit multiple home runs off three different pitchers in the same game. It also happened on May 17, 1967 in Boston. The Orioles hit three homers off Dennis Bennett and two off Galen Cisco and Bill Landis in a 12-8 victory. That nugget was provided by the Orioles' PR department. Jim Palmer lasted only one inning in that game, allowing three runs and four hits. Bill Dillman got the win with five innings of relief. Got to plead...

On the night that the Orioles celebrate their 60th anniversary, third baseman Manny Machado hits a three-run homer. Earl Weaver must be smiling. Weaver wouldn't have approved of David Lough's sacrifice bunt after Ryan Flaherty led off the second inning with a single, but otherwise... Nick Hundley drove in Flaherty with a single to break a scoreless tie, Nick Markakis walked and Machado provided some serious lift to Justin Masterson's 88 mph sinker, the ball clearing the Orioles bullpen in...

The Nationals find themselves in a hole early in Atlanta. After being retired in order in the first, Stephen Strasburg took the mound in the bottom of the inning. Strasburg retired the first two batters he faced, but then issued a walk to Freddie Freeman. Justin Upton followed with a two-run homer to center field. Strasburg then walked Jason Heyward, but struck out Evan Gattis to end the inning. The Nats trail 2-0 at the end of one inning. Update II: Strasburg's struggles continued...

The Orioles' latest homestand begins tonight here against the 2013 National League champion St. Louis Cardinals. The Yankees come to town Monday. The Orioles begin play tonight with the largest division lead in baseball at five games and with the majors' third-best record at 65-49. St. Louis is 61-52 and is one game out in the NL Central. The Orioles are just 1-5 all-time against the Cardinals. They lost two of three in St. Louis in 2003 and got swept three straight here in 2011. Tonight,...
