From Bryce Harper's opening day show to Denard Span's hitting streak and so much more, last season was filled with so many memorable moments. I've spent every Thursday since October throwin' it back to these moments, and at last, we are at the final Thursday before opening day.
I'm dedicating our last Throwback Thursday post to the best of the best from 2013. While you anxiously wait these last four days for the 2014 season to begin, relive last year's highlights in the video...
JUPITER, Fla.- According to this tweet from Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, the Nationals appear to have found a veteran backup corner infielder to fill out their 25-man roster, Kevin Frandsen.
Frandsen, who was released by the Phillies yesterday, would back up at first base and third base, and can also play second base and the outfield corners.
The 31-year-old is a career .259 hitter in 402 games with the Giants, Angels and Phillies. He batted .338 in 55 games with Philadelphia in 2012, and...
VIERA, Fla. - When a team makes six cuts in a day this late in spring, leaving just 27 guys remaining in big league camp, you would think that nearly all the roster questions have been answered and that there isn't much work left for the team to do before opening day.
And in a sense, that's true. We learned yesterday that right-hander Aaron Barrett will make the Nationals' opening day bullpen, which locks up the team's final relief spot. Barrett making the 'pen is a bit of a surprise...
SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles are playing two road games today, and I can't recall the last time they pulled off a doubleheader without taking the field at Ed Smith Stadium.
They make another trip to Fort Myers today for a 1:05 p.m. game against the Red Sox, but they take a left turn at the Daniels Parkway exit off Interstate 75 instead of going right toward the Twins complex.
Miguel Gonzalez gets the start for the Orioles, who will head back toward Sarasota and make a stop in Port Charlotte...
SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles are playing two games today and the biggest news will come at the conclusion of each one.
Cuts will be made. Deep, bloody cuts.
The Orioles have 40 players on their camp roster and need to eliminate 15. Four of them will go on the disabled list - Manny Machado, Edgmer Escalona, Francisco Peguero and Johan Santana - and Troy Patton will begin serving his 25-game suspension.
That's five.
Rule 5 pick Michael Almanzar has tendinitis in his left patella and could...
If predictions that are unfavorable to the Orioles get you stirred up, then don't read the ESPN the Magazine's 2014 MLB preview issue.
The magazine's editors actually used a chemistry element in this year's predictions. They tried to quantify clubhouse chemistry using three elements they called demographic factor, isolation factor and ego factor.
I give them credit for trying, but there are some things in this game you just can't put a stat on. Anyway, the Orioles actually gained a win...
SARASOTA, Fla. - As Orioles manager Buck Showalter sat in his office following today's 4-1 loss to the Twins in Fort Myers, he talked about reliever Brad Brach's impressive spring training and mentioned how he planned on making at least one cut tonight.
Showalter indicated that the roster move would involve a pitcher who wouldn't be scheduled to throw in Wednesday's split-squad games.
As it turned out, Showalter was twice referencing Brach.
The Orioles optioned Brach to Triple-A...
The Orioles today announced that they have optioned right-hander Brad Brach to Triple-A Norfolk.
With this move, the Orioles now have 40 players at major league spring training, including six non-roster invitees.
VIERA, Fla. - You have all the information on the Nationals' five cuts, Aaron Barrett making the opening day bullpen and where this all leaves the competition for the final couple roster spots.
There might be some more news to come on that front, especially if the Nats end up bringing in someone from outside the organization to fill the final bench job. An experienced corner infielder seems to make sense, but we shall see how it plays out.
Now, some quick notes and quotes from today's game...
The Orioles today released five players from minor league camp, bringing the total number to 13 minor league players released since spring training started.
The club released infielder Connor Narron, right-handed pitchers Luis Vizcaino, Eric Beaulac and Juan Guzman and left-handed pitcher Aaron Laffey, a Cumberland, Md., native.
Narron, the Orioles' fifth-round pick in 2010, hit just .211 in four seasons with the club and had not advanced past the Single-A level. The 22-year-old Narron hit...
