SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles made two expected roster moves this afternoon, optioning infielder David Adams to Triple-A Norfolk and reassigning catcher Caleb Joseph to minor league camp.
Adams was on the major league roster after being claimed off waivers last night from the Indians, but he had no shot at making the 25-man roster on opening day. Showalter indicated during batting practice that Adams was headed to Twin Lakes Park.
Adams was flying into Florida today.
Showalter told reporters...
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Tanner Roark made his final case for either the last spot in the Nationals rotation or the last spot in their bullpen today, allowing just one run in 5 2/3 innings in a 3-1 loss to the Mets.
Roark struck out five and walked one today, and will finish his spring with the following line: 13 2/3 IP, 11 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 11 Ks.
With Roark's spring complete, manager Matt Williams will get his final look at Taylor Jordan tomorrow, and then will decide which of the two...
The Orioles today announced that they have optioned infielder David Adams to Triple-A Norfolk and reassigned catcher Caleb Joseph to minor league camp.
With the moves, the Orioles now have 41 players at major league spring training, including seven non-roster invitees.
SARASOTA, Fla. - Orioles third baseman Manny Machado will begin the 2014 season on the 15-day disabled list.
Manager Buck Showalter made the announcement following today's 7-7 tie with the Pirates at Ed Smith Stadium.
Showalter said Machado being on the active roster on opening day is "not realistic."
Machado underwent surgery on his left knee in October. He was cleared to start running again yesterday after being bothered by a mild strain in his left calf and having scar tissue break up...
ORIOLES QUICK WRAP
Score: Orioles 7, Pirates 7 (10)
Recap: The Pirates scored four runs off Steve Johnson in the sixth to erase the Orioles' 3-1 lead, but Ryan Flaherty hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the inning and Delmon Young broke the tie with an RBI single in the seventh. Zach Britton gave up the tying run in the eighth, with Jonathan Schoop committing an error. Britton walked off the mound with head athletic trainer Richie Bancells after striking out Starling Marte, but he seemed...
NATIONALS QUICK WRAP
Score: Mets 3, Nationals 1
Recap: Tanner Roark looked good in his 5 2/3 innings, allowing just one run. Drew Storen allowed two runs in two-thirds of an inning. The Nats' only run came in the first on a Ryan Zimmerman infield single.
Need to know: Roark further showed that he's deserving of a spot on the roster with another solid outing. It's tough to see him getting left off the 25-man at this point.
On deck: Monday, at Marlins in Jupiter, 1:05 p.m.

SARASOTA, Fla. - Today's starting pitchers, the Orioles' Kevin Gausman and the Pirates' Garret Cole, allowed leadoff home runs in the first inning.
How often does that happen? Anyone care to look it up?
Starling Marte drove a Gausman pitch to center field. Nick Markakis, who remained in the lineup despite dealing with a stomach issue, cleared the fence in left-center field for his first spring home run.
David Lough reached on an error, stole second and took third on a ground ball, but...
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Today will mark Tanner Roark's fourth, and final, spring training start. This will be his last chance to make an impression on manager Matt Williams and the Nationals' decision-makers before the last spot in the rotation is decided.
Williams has mentioned Roark, Taylor Jordan and Chris Young as the three options for the job, although it's widely assumed that Roark and Jordan are the two legitimate final candidates.
As long as he makes it out of today's start...
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Anthony Rendon remains out of the Nationals lineup today with what manager Matt Williams called a "really, really bad" chest cold.
Rendon last played Thursday against the Tigers, but has been battling the chest cold of late, and has been held out of action. Rendon's been taking antibiotics and has improved recently, Williams said, and the second baseman felt well enough this morning to work out back at the Nationals' facility in Viera.
"He's getting better,"...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Veteran reliever Luis Ayala threw a bullpen session today at Twin Lakes Park, and corner infielder Brett Wallace will be cleared to work out there Monday morning.
The Orioles announced today that they signed Ayala and Wallace to minor league deals.
Ayala, 36, struggled mightily with the Nats this spring. In six innings, he allowed nine runs and 10 hits and posted a 2.00 WHIP. But he was 5-5 with a 2.64 ERA in 66 games for the Orioles in 2012 and 1-1 with a 2.90 ERA in 37...
