LAKELAND, Fla. - Greetings from Joker Marchant Stadium, where the Nationals will face the Tigers at 1:05 p.m. today. Actually, they'll be playing one another three out of the next four days, but we're concentrating on today.
Taylor Jordan gets the start for the Nationals today, with Luis Ayala, Michael Gonzalez, Drew Storen and Blake Treinen also available to pitch.
For the Nationals:
CF Denard Span
2B Anthony Rendon
RF Nate McLouth
DH Scott Hairston
C Jose Lobaton
1B Tyler Moore
LF Jeff...
SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles today optioned pitcher Dylan Bundy to Double-A Bowie. The move doesn't change much for Bundy, who is not yet pitching in any games. It's just that his rehab work could shift from Ed Smith Stadium to the O's minor league complex.
"Don't know if it's my place to say exactly what we are going to do (with where my rehab will be). We are still looking into what we can do, but I'll be down there throwing for the next week for sure," Bundy said.
He underwent...
The Orioles today announced that they have optioned right-hander Dylan Bundy to Double-A Bowie.
With the assignment, the Orioles now have 46 players at major league spring training, including nine non-roster invitees.
SARASOTA, Fla. - Kevin Gausman went through a few changes last year, his first full season in pro baseball. He ended the year with a second changeup and some tweaking of his mechanics.
It would seem surprising that he made some changes during the season, especially for a pitcher that was the fourth overall pick in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft.
After such success in college, was Gausman surprised that he changed a few things once he got to pro ball?
"Not really. As a pitcher, you always...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Left-hander Zach Britton said he is being given an extra day to rest and will pitch Saturday against the Yankees at Ed Smith Stadium.
Britton would have been used for the fourth time in nine days.
Suk-min Yoon will make his Orioles debut Saturday after obtaining his work visa in Ottawa. He's sitting at his locker this morning.
Yoon said "everything went well" in Ottawa, other than his cancelled flight on Wednesday, and he's looking forward to pitching this...
SARASOTA, Fla. - David Lough is leading off and playing left field for the Orioles today in their 1:05 p.m. game against the Twins in Fort Myers.
Not many regulars on this trip. Not a big surprise, either.
Henry Urrutia is in right field. His defense has improved, but his baserunning mistakes are being noticed in the dugout. Not a good sign.
Nolan Reimold is the designated hitter after getting about 12 plate appearances yesterday at the minor league complex.
For the Orioles
David Lough...
VIERA, Fla. - Neither Adam LaRoche nor Denard Span had the type of 2013 season he was hoping for.
LaRoche hit just .237 with a lowly .735 OPS, which, if you exclude his injury-plagued 2011 season, was the lowest on-base plus slugging percentage the veteran first baseman has posted in his career.
Span finished the season really strongly, hitting .338/.375/.459 over his final 39 games, but was slow to adjust to a new team and a new league, and it took him 4 1/2 months to find a groove.
Now,...
SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles are making another trip to Fort Myers this afternoon to play the Twins. Left-hander Wei-Yin Chen is on the mound for his third start after shutting out the Pirates on one hit over three innings in his previous appearance.
Overall, Chen has permitted two earned runs and six hits in five innings, with one walk and three strikeouts.
Zach Britton, T.J. McFarland and Tommy Hunter also will pitch for the Orioles. Britton, as I mentioned yesterday, will be working for...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Pitcher Eddie Gamboa turned 30 in December. That is an age where some players that have never reached the big leagues probably know it will never happen.
But for Gamboa, the dream of pitching in the majors may now be closer for him than ever. He just finished a strong stint in big league camp for the Orioles. In five games, he pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit with six strikeouts.
It was about this time last year when Gamboa reinvented himself as a...
SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles sent Nolan Reimold to minor league camp today to get a lot of at-bats as he continues to progress from two neck surgeries that limited him to a combined 195 at-bats the last two seasons.
Reimold certainly got his work in. He batted in both the Double-A and Triple-A exhibition games against Tampa Bay, often walking from one field to the next to take his hacks at the O's Buck O'Neil Baseball Complex at Twin Lakes Park.
As it turns out he didn't swing all that...
