A lot has changed for the Nationals this season.
They have a new sense of optimism, five legitimate quality starting pitchers and a deep back end of the bullpen with a number of power arms.
But not everything's changed. Teddy Roosevelt still can't win a race.
Those hoping the 2012 home opener would serve as Teddy's first ever win were left disappointed yesterday, when Tom took home the W after a battling it out with Teddy down the stretch.
"What's the poor guy got to do to get a...
For Nationals fans - and fans of great starting pitching - the past three games may seem like days in heaven. From the beginning of Tuesday's win over the New York Mets, the starters have been on a roll, racking up a string of 18 scoreless innings in the team's three-game winning streak. In their respective starts, Ross Detwiler on Tuesday, Stephen Strasburg on Wednesday and Gio Gonzalez on Thursday showed good control, overpowering stuff and the ability to pitch out of what little trouble...
It's fitting that the surnames Bundy and Bunyan are so similar. In two brief minor league outings, 19-year-old pitcher Dylan Bundy is burnishing a legend among Orioles fans that's roughly equivalent to Paul Bunyan's place in American folklore. However, there's a distance between the developing Bundy legend and the actual Bundy reality I witnessed firsthand this week in Kannapolis, N.C. (You can see photos and video of Bundy's start on Roar From 34.)
Let me be clear from the outset that...
He is the man on the Orioles coaching staff that started working with Mark Reynolds on his defense during spring camp and will continue to try and help Reynolds make needed improvements with his defense.
DeMarlo Hale is the Orioles' third-base coach, but also works with the team's infielders. He served on Terry Francona's Red Sox coaching staffs the last six years, the last two as bench coach. He was a coach with Texas before that for four seasons and for three of his seasons there...
The Orioles have been on both sides of a three-game sweep. They've already got two firsts out of the way in the 2012 season.
Now it's time for their first road trip.
Tommy Hunter gets the start in tonight's series opener in Toronto, where the Orioles have lost 26 of their last 31 games. They haven't won a season series against the Blue Jays since 2004.
Jays starter Brandon Morrow is 2-2 with a 4.46 ERA in 12 career appearances against the Orioles, including five starts. In his first...
The message from multiple guys in the Nationals' clubhouse after today's 3-2 extra-inning win over the Reds was the same: It's too bad we couldn't finish this one off for Gio.
Gio Gonzalez pitched seven exceptional innings in his debut at Nationals Park, allowing just two hits and no runs, but even though the Nationals held a 2-0 lead entering the ninth inning, they were unable to get the left-handed starter his first win of the season.
"Just an outstanding effort," manager Davey...
Ryan Zimmerman didn't see the outstretched right palm of Roger Bernadina at home plate, the hitter's signal that he should hold at third. Zimmerman was focused on the ball skittering away from Reds rookie catcher Devin Mesoraco and knew that it had bounced far enough from home plate to allow him to score the winning run in the Nationals' 10-inning 3-2 victory in their home opener Thursday afternoon.
Chalk it up to a well-honed baseball impulse, because if Zimmerman had taken to heart the...
Craig Stammen is pegged as the long right-handed reliever out of the bullpen for the Nationals. But Thursday his role became that of closer as he struck out the side in the 10th inning to help lift the Nationals over the Reds, 3-2.
Stammen (1-0) struck out Willie Harris, Drew Stubbs and Zach Cozart. The last strike out of Cozart was particularly emphatic. It was of the looking variety, which brought with it a huge roar from the partisan 40,907 at Nationals Park on home opening day.
That...
Of course you do. He was at spring training with the Orioles until they put him on waivers four days before breaking camp.
The Reds signed Alfredo Simon, and he pitched the 10th inning in today's game against the Nationals. He later lost today's game by throwing a wild pitch that allowed Ryan Zimmerman to score.
Simon hit Zimmerman with his first pitch and gave up a single to Jayson Werth. He was one out away from escaping the jam when he skipped a pitch past catcher Devin Mesoraco.
Simon...
So much for all the headlines about Gio Gonzalez leading the Nationals to a win in his home debut.
Gonzalez won't get a victory in the Nats' home opener despite throwing seven shutout innings, and we've got a tie game here heading to the bottom of the ninth.
The Reds tied this game 2-2 in the top-half of the ninth after Ryan Ludwick's single to left plated two runs off Nats closer Brad Lidge.
Ludwick's grounder could've been handled by third baseman Ryan Zimmerman, but the ball skipped...
