Brad Bergesen mentioned after last night's 8-5 loss to the Blue Jays that he failed to slow down the game in the third inning. He was gripping and ripping.
As I've written in the past, a lot of young starters tend to slow the pace too much and compound their problems. The defense falls asleep. But in Bergesen's case, he can't find the brakes when he needs to pump them.
The defense should have been on its toes, with Bergesen pitching like his hair was on fire, but it was dismal.

Last night Brad Bergesen struggled - again. Pitching three terrible innings, giving up six runs and effectively putting the Orioles out of it before they even had a chance to be in it. The Orioles bullpen did not help either. All in all it was just another all-too-familiar sight for Orioles fans.
This weekend, the Orioles will play four games in three days against the New York Yankees in The Bronx. Young Orioles starters Chris Tillman and Zach Britton have been recalled to start the day-night...
J.J. Hardy and Vladimir Guerrero homered in the top of the first inning to provide an early cushion for starter Brad Bergesen.
It deflated in a hurry.
The Blue Jays scored twice in the bottom half of the inning, a bases-loaded walk producing the first run.
So much for early momentum.
I won't search for excuses for Bergesen. I don't know what's in his head tonight. But if my wife were due to give birth this weekend, I'd be seriously challenged to focus on the task at hand.
More power to...

The Orioles have a chance to put three different series losing streaks and stretches to an end with a win tonight at Toronto in the series finale.
This season, they are 0-6-1 in their last seven series since taking two of three from the Reds from June 24-26.
A win would also end the O's current nine-series road losing streak. The Orioles are 6-22 on the road since taking two of three in St. Pete against Tampa Bay from May 13-15.
The Orioles can also end a nine-series losing run at...
Left-hander Zach Britton and infielder Cesar Izturis will join the Orioles in New York, which means the 25-man roster will undergo another transformation.
Britton is slated to pitch the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Yankees, so he'll be recalled over the weekend. He was 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA in three games with Double-A Bowie, with 14 hits, two walks, 15 strikeouts and three home runs allowed in 11 2/3 innings.
Izturis has been on an injury rehab assignment at Bowie...
Single-A Potomac Nationals left fielder Destin Hood has played well both offensively and defensively so far this season. His name is always mentioned when the conversation turns to the top prospects in the organization, and for good reason.
Hood combines top speed and excellent hands with good contact at the plate. The P-Nats have started the second half with a nice run as they look to defend their Mills Cup title in September, and Hood has been a major part of that surge.
Hood has made good...
Any way you slice it, bullying isn't welcome - in school, on teams, in the workplace, in life.
The Orioles have released an 80-second anti-bullying public service announcement in support of the It Gets Better Project and The Trevor Project. O's pitchers Jake Arrieta, Jason Berken, Zach Britton, Michael Gonzalez and Kevin Gregg appear in the PSA, delivering encouragement to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered youth who are being bullied.
The Orioles join the San Francisco Giants,...
If a win/loss record is the true indication of a team's success, then the Nationals front office should take serious consideration in bringing back Jim Riggleman to manage this team next season.
Don't worry, I'm only being facetious, but let's not overlook the fact that ever since Riggleman bailed on his team they simply haven't been the same. In fact, it's been getting so bad that the Nats are currently battling the Florida Marlins for fourth place in the division. Hard to believe that...
The Double-A Bowie Baysox have gotten some decent pitching all season. Bowie is 56-46 and just a game and a half out of first place behind a pitching staff with an ERA of 3.57 that is second best in the Eastern League.
Two members of their current rotation are veterans who have been at this level before, but they should get credit for the seasons they are having for the Baysox.
Tim Bascom was the Orioles' fourth-round draft pick out of Central Florida in 2007, a draft where the Orioles...
