Diplán outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk

Pitcher Marcos Diplán is staying in the Orioles organization.

The club announced today that Diplán cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk, which likely sets him up as a non-roster invitee to spring training.

Diplán, 23, was designated for assignment on Dec. 29 to clear space for pitcher Kohl Stewart, who signed a split contract with the Orioles and had to be placed on the 40-man roster.

Diplán pitched at the Double-A levels in the Brewers and Twins systems last year and posted a 4.85 ERA and 1.471 WHIP with 44 walks and 73 strikeouts in 68 2/3 innings. The Tigers claimed him off waivers from the Twins in September.

Though Diplán holds a minor league option, the Orioles decided to take him off the 40-man as the corresponding move for Stewart, who could compete for a rotation spot in spring training.

The team hasn't released its list of camp invites.

The status of pitcher Eric Hanhold will be determined later. He's in limbo after the Orioles designated him for assignment Tuesday while announcing the signing of shortstop José Iglesias to a one-year contract with a club option for 2021.

Hanhold was claimed off waivers from the Mets on Sept 16, but he didn't pitch for the Orioles. He never made it back to the majors in 2019.
