Nationals place Desmond on paternity leave list, recall Bernadina

The Washington Nationals today placed shortstop Ian Desmond on Major League Baseball's Paternity Leave List and recalled outfielder Roger Bernadina from Syracuse of the Triple-A International League. Nationals Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement. Bernadina batted .267 (12-for-45) with three doubles, one home run and two RBI in 13 games with the Chiefs. The 26-year-old is tied for ninth in the International League with five stolen bases. Bernadina is a career .241 hitter with 20 doubles, four triples, 11 home runs, 49 RBI and 21 stolen bases in 163 games during three seasons (2008-10) with the Nationals. Desmond, 25, has four doubles, two home runs and eight RBI in 20 games this season. He is tied for third in the National League with eight stolen bases.
