Let second-half baseball begin!
Even though the Orioles were off for just a few days, for many fans, it seemed like much longer. Granted, with five Orioles being named to the American League All-Star team, it may not have seemed like such a long break given the black and orange at Citi Field.
Before we officially begin the second half of the season, we're looking back at the first few months. Holding a 53-43 record and in the middle of a very tight AL East race, the Orioles have surprised...
Manny Machado hasn't even completed his first full season in the majors, and it's already difficult to discern which of his defensive efforts qualifies as "the play." Until Sunday, it was the pump-fake-to-first-throw-to-third showing against the Rays from last season; then he went gunning down the Yankees' Luis Cruz last week on an off-balance throw from foul territory to one-up himself. Manny does more than doubles.
Machado's efforts are part of an overall defensive renaissance in...
We all as fans know that Chris Davis is having a season for the ages.
This weekend, while driving around the Baltimore area in my SUV and driving to the Washington area, I flipped one of the prominent sports talk radio stations in the area.
The talk on that station centered on the Orioles' poor road trip to Chicago and New York, plus Davis.
However, the talk on the muscular first baseman was not all positive.
Almost every other call I heard on the station centered on whether or not Davis...
Hearing that Chris Davis was selected for the 2013 Home Run Derby was about as surprising as hearing that he hit another home run.
Davis happily obliged when he was asked to participate by American League Home Run Derby captain Robinson Cano.
Going into tonight's games, Davis is leading the majors with 33 home runs, five more than No. 2 on the list, Miguel Cabrera.
If those 33 home runs aren't enough to convince you that he belongs, consider this: He broke the Orioles' record for most...
June wasn't kind to Adam Jones. The Orioles centerfielder hit just .237/.248/.386 with four home runs and 20 RBIs after hitting .311/.344/.546 in May and .327/.350/.522 in April. Jones' batting average dipped from .319 on May 31 to .292 on June 30. On July 4, Jones did something at the plate that he hadn't done in 45 games: He drew a walk. The coverage of Jones' walk-less streak combined with his declining numbers led to much debate about his plate discipline this season. I took a look at...
When Adam Jones tees off at Camden Yards, we watch our Twitter timelines fill up with excited tweets from Orioles fans.
But did you know that tweets like these could land you a private hitting lesson with No. 10?
MASN's new social loyalty program "Touch 'Em All" is designed to reward Orioles fans each time they post to their social media accounts with MASN Orioles-related pictures and updates. By using designated hashtags, sharing our postgame meme on Facebook, tweeting at us and more,...
First things first: Greetings to all MASN viewers and MASNsports.com readers from sunny Italy! Like most people from the mid-Atlantic region, Orioles baseball goes hand-in-hand for me with vacation. Two weeks ago, I was out at the Delaware shore for the weekend and I could very easily pick up the Ocean City station that carries the O's, so I sat on the beach and listened to the games all weekend. However, coming back to my parents' house in the Italian region of Sicily (where my roots are)...
A day after being selected for the 2013 All-Star Game and with the game on the line in New York, Manny Machado knocked a grounder toward the dugout, picked it up and made an amazing throw off of his back foot to end the sixth.

Immediately, national writers took notice. Here are just a few tweets in reaction to Machado's amazing play.
Somewhere, Brooks Robinson is saying: I can't believe Manny Machado got to that ball.— Buster Olney...
We all know Chris Dickerson has contributed to this team. He is batting .269 with 4 home runs and 13 RBIs, but most importantly, he's half of this amazing handshake with Adam Jones.
Chris Davis is in the midst of an historic offensive season that is likely to rank among the greatest in team history. However, the season's not complete. So as we head toward the All-Star Game, I chose to look at what Davis has done thus far and compare his numbers to those of all of the Orioles' previous All-Star first baseman prior to the break.
As you might guess, Davis' first-half totals stack up favorably with his O's competition through the years. He has had the best first-half...
This week, the Baltimore Orioles got an early start on the trade deadline period and did not wait until late July to make a deal.
Despite their 48-37 record as of this morning, the Orioles - as most know - have a need for starting pitching, like most teams. They rank 29th in the majors with a 4.41 ERA and obviously if the Orioles want to make a run for the postseason, the pitching situation must improve.
The Orioles got some much-needed pitching help as they acquired right-hander Scott...
Dan Duquette's successes as Orioles general manager (or whatever his title) have, for me, been a surprise from the jump. And, apparently, he's nowhere near finished surprising.
In last week's guest blog, I talked about how there was no need for the Orioles to swing a win-now move. The thinking was that the depth-plus-progress model that has so far been the mark of his tenure is working just fine. What I didn't recognize (shame on me) was a strong middle option.
Find an off-the-radar guy...
If you attended either last night's game against the Yankees, or Saturday night's game, you probably didn't see any noticeable difference between that game and any other run-of-the-mill Orioles game. However, to anyone that watched either or both of those games on television, the difference was more than palpable. On Saturday night, the Orioles were televised nationally by FOX, and last night they were televised nationally on "ESPN Sunday Night Baseball."
We're obsessed with the concept...
Is the Orioles-Yankees rivalry because of the 1996 ALCS? Is it due to the close proximity between the two cities? Or, is it just the natural tension that arises between two competitive teams in the same division?
Regardless of the reason, the rivalry between the Orioles and Yankees is very much alive, and with the AL East tighter than ever, it has been taken to a whole new level.
Check out the latest edition of "Yard Talk" to hear fans talk about what makes the head-to-head battles between...
Coming into the game in the third inning, rookie Kevin Gausman pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings, striking out four. He left the game after the top of the seventh, and Nate McLouth hit a solo shot in the bottom of the inning for the Orioles' go-ahead run.
Gausman earned his first major league win and was rewarded with a pie from Adam Jones. Hey, it's no locker of doughnuts, but it still has to taste pretty sweet.
To watch Gausman get pied, click the photo below. For a complete recap of the...
It continues to be a busy time on Eutaw Street.
After the 2012 season produced a record nine Eutaw Street home runs, the Indians' Lonnie Chisenhall hit the fourth such home run of the 2013 season Thursday night. His blast was the 70th home run to reach Eutaw Street since Oriole Park at Camden Yards opened in 1992.
There have only been five seasons when batters reached Eutaw Street more than four times - 1996 (seven), 1999 (five), 2008 (eight), 2011 (five) and 2012 (nine). This could be the...
Not that we necessarily needed proof, but last weekend's series against the Blue Jays served as a stark reminder to O's fans (and possibly to the Orioles themselves) that the American League East is very, very strong. Strong enough, indeed, that the O's could finish solidly above .500 - win, say, 90 games - and still miss the playoffs.
What to do?
Truthfully, a case can be made for making a hard push. For cobbling together some kind of trade package and swinging for a win-now move. I have...
A season ago, baseball pundits cited smoke and mirrors and luck as the reasons the Orioles were competing atop the American League East and in the hunt for their first spot in the postseason since 1997. These same experts reported that the O's would fall back to earth and that their record was unsustainable due to their historic success in extra innings and games decided by one run.
With nearly the same roster and in an even more improved AL East, the Orioles have continued their winning...
There were a few things that were said last week that kind of bugged me. Chris Davis hit home runs last Sunday against Boston, and then again Monday and Wednesday (twice) at Detroit, and in Toronto on Friday. He currently leads the majors with 27 homers. But many fans, and even some people who follow the Orioles, don't want to let a certain matter rest. Whenever a big league slugger breaks out, the PED argument always seems to come up. On June 16, someone tweeted, "I would love to see Chris...
Ever wondered what Adam Jones considers to be the breakfast of champions? Curious about the center fielder's pregame rituals? Or what his favorite off-day activity is? Well, wonder no more!
Each month during the season, MASNsports.com holds a live chat with the Orioles' center fielder. But these chats, which stream on MASNsports.com, can't happen without you, the fan.
Leading up to the chat, we ask you for your questions - baseball-related or not - for Jones. If you have a question for...
