Stevenson collects five hits in 15-3 Glendale runaway

The Glendale Desert Dogs got off to a slow start in Arizona Fall Leaque play, but led by the likes of Nationals prospects Andrew Stevenson and Drew Ward, they are surging to the finish line.

The D-Dogs (11-12) won their fifth straight game in a 15-3 shellacking of first-place Peoria on Monday. Glendale posted 16 hits and enjoyed outbursts of five runs in the third and fifth innings.

Glendale's elimination number is seven. They are just 1 1/2 games behind Peoria and Surprise for the West Division lead.

Stevenson-Swings-Senators-Sidebar.jpgStevenson went 5-for-6 with three runs and two RBIs, highlighted by a solo homer in the fourth, his second round tripper in AFL play. He is now hitting .379.

Shortstop Osvaldo Abreu went 1-for-4 with a run scored a walk, but struck out three times. His average is .244.

Left-hander Nick Lee tossed a shutout inning, allowing no runs with one walk and two strikeouts. His AFL ERA is 2.08.

Third baseman Ward was on a rest day, but is hitting .327, good for second on the team.

Stevenson leads the team in hits with 22, while Ward is second with 18. Stevenson has four doubles and 12 RBIs with five stolen bases. Ward has collected three doubles and six RBIs. Abreu has two doubles and three stolen bases with five RBIs.

Right-hander Jake Johansen has a 1.00 ERA in six appearances, surrendering one earned run in nine innings while scattering eight hits and walking only one. He has three strikeouts.

Right-hander Ryan Brinley is 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA in six games. He has seven strikeouts to go with just one walk.

Starter Austin Voth had his best start of AFL play on Thursday, firing five scoreless innings in earning his first win in five appearances. He has allowed only five hits in his last two starts. Left-handed hitters have a 1.35 ERA against his work. Voth is scheduled to start Wednesday versus Surprise.
