The Arrieta Up There

Jake Arrieta told reporters earlier today that he met with manager Dave Trembley, pitching coach Rick Kranitz and president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail about joining the minor league camp. The idea apparently came from the young right-hander, which is an unusual occurrence. Arrieta only pitched five innings, not counting an intrasquad game. He knew where he'd start the season, and it wasn't in the Orioles' rotation or bullpen. No sense delaying the inevitable. "During BP I wanted to talk to Kranny for a little while, and I told him that I'm more than happy to be here, I'm the type of guy who doesn't really say much. I just do what I'm told, but I wanted to let them know that I wanted to start getting more innings," he said. "I'd probably still be over there today if I didn't say anything. I felt like it was time for me to say something and get my innings in and prepare for the season. I'm aware that I'm going to Norfolk again and I'll just do my job down there and be ready when they need me. "They know that it's time for me to start getting built up. I'm aware of that, they're aware of that. I enjoyed my time thoroughly over there. I plan on seeing those guys again soon. I valued my time there with everybody. I'll just have to move forward and hopefully get back there soon." Arrieta said he was more relaxed and prepared this spring compared to 2009, though he had to get accustomed to a varied pitching routine. "My role was a little bit different," he said. "I started two games if you count the intrasquad. Throwing out of the relief role was a little bit different. Just something you have to adjust to. But I'm ready to start games and kind of go through my routine and just get ready for the season."
