By The Phillies got to Tanner Roark in the first inning thanks to a leadoff walk to César Hernández and a single by Odúbel Herrera. After a wild pitch advanced the runners, Carlos Santana unleashed a two-run single.
Roark then settled in and struck out four batters in a row.
In the second, Juan Soto greeted right-hander Zach Eflin with a double down the third base line. Michael A. Taylor added a run-scoring double almost to the same place, past third baseman Jesmel ValentÃn to score Soto. Taylor stole third base. He now has a career-high 13-game hit streak to pair well with a career-high 22 stolen bases on the season. Wilmer Difo added a towering sacrifice fly to left field to score Taylor.
The Phillies grabbed the lead back in the third. Hernández singled and Herrera launched a two-run homer, his 13th of the season.
The Nationals enjoyed singles by Roark and Anthony Rendon in the bottom of the third. But with two outs, Soto grounded out to first.
After three innings, the Phillies lead the Nats, 4-2.
Update: The Phillies chased Roark from the game in the fifth, scoring two runs on four hits. Roark allowed an RBI single to Nick Williams, then Tim Collins replaced Roark and surrendered a run-scoring single to Andrew Knapp.
Roark lasted 4 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on seven hits with four walks, one wild pitch, one homer, and seven strikeouts. He fired 113 pitches, 68 for strikes.
Mid-fifth, the Phillies lead the Nats, 6-2.
Update II: Santana adds a two-run homer off of Matt Grace in the sixth. He has four RBIs. The Phillies open it up now. It's an 8-2 lead after 5 1/2 innings.
Update III: Sammy SolÃs allowed three runs in the eighth, highlighted by a two-run single from Williams. After eight frames, the Phillies lead 11-2.
Update IV: Justin Miller gave up a solo shot to Andrew Knapp, loaded the bases, but eventually struck out the side in a strange ninth inning.
Zac Curtis pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth for the Phillies.
Final score: the Phillies 12, the Nats 2.
The Nats falls to 11-12 in National League East and are 18-19 at home.
