Spring invitees (updated)

The Orioles have invited 12 non-roster players to spring training: Left-handers Chris George and Mike Hinckley; right-handers Jake Arrieta, Frank Mata, Josh Perrault, Alfredo Simon and Ross Wolf; catchers Michel Hernandez, Caleb Joseph and Chad Moeller; outfielder Jeff Salazar; and infielder Scott Moore. The Orioles will have to create room on the 40-man roster if anyone from this group makes the club. Moeller is the most likely candidate. Moore has an outside shot if the Orioles don't sign a third baseman and start Garrett Atkins at first. Arrieta will compete for a spot in the rotation, but I'm predicting that he opens the season in Triple-A Norfolk's rotation. The Orioles don't need a large number of invitees because their minor league camp is so close. They can always summon a player to the major league camp and not use up two tanks of gas. Pitchers and catchers report to Sarasota on Feb. 17, with their first workout being held the next morning. The first full-squad workout is Feb. 23. The Orioles' minor league pitchers will hold their first workout on March 2. The first minor league full-squad workout is March 6. For you numbers lovers: Kevin Millwood is listed as No. 34, with Matt Albers being assigned 37. Mike Gonzalez will wear 51. No number is listed for Garrett Atkins. Brian Matusz has switched to 17. Josh Bell will wear 66 in camp. Moeller is keeping 16. Plan accordingly.
