"MASN All Access" podcast: Wrapping up road trip and preparing for home opener

The Nationals had an historic start to the season, winning their first four games and leading for 36 straight innings. But they dropped the final two games in Atlanta to finish the season's first road trip 4-2.

So what went right and what went wrong over the season's first six games? Who impressed and who didn't? Paul Mancano and I are back on the "MASN All Access" podcast to break down the Nats' impressive trip through Cincinnati and Atlanta before the team comes back to open the home schedule. Hopefully, you can squeeze in this episode on your way to the ballpark or the television set for opening day.

The rotation certainly impressed early on, particularly Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg, Gio Gonzalez and Tanner Roark. Each pitcher in that foursome went at least six innings in their season debuts and combined to allow just three earned runs. But Scherzer did struggle in Wednesday's game against the Braves.

MAA-podcast-logo-sidebar.jpgA.J. Cole, however, did not look great in his first outing, giving up 10 runs and 10 hits against the Braves. How much longer can Davey Martinez put Cole on the mound every fifth day before Jeremy Hellickson gets his crack at the fifth starter's spot?

The offense also impressed, before slowing down over their last two games in Atlanta. Adam Eaton was named National League Player of the Week after going 8-for-13 with two home runs and five RBIs in the three games against the Reds. And Bryce Harper is back to being Bryce Harper. He went through a stretch of eight plate appearances where he either homered and walked, and he already has four home runs and nine RBIs.

And it's finally time for baseball to return to our nation's capital. We wrap up this episode looking ahead opening day on South Capitol Street and the matchup with the Mets. Could New York prove to be the Nationals' toughest competition in the NL East this year? There's a major "if" to that answer. (I'm sure you can guess what that is.)
