With catcher Kurt Suzuki on the shelf with a sore elbow, Yan Gomes was pressed into duty on short notice Sunday and delivered. Gomes put together the kind of game the Nationals expected from him when they acquired him from the Indians in November.
The veteran from Brazil went out and guided Max Scherzer to a win. He also belted two homers in a game for the first time since September 2017 as the Nats finally defeated the Braves 9-4, salvaging the final game of a four-game series.
"It's just...
Let's not try to sugarcoat this: The Nationals had a bad weekend in Atlanta.
They lost three winnable games, fell at one point a full 10 games back in a division race that's all but over now and saw their once comfortable cushion in the wild card race shrink. They lost Kurt Suzuki and Roenis ElÃas to injuries. They couldn't do squat against the Braves rotation for three nights.
All of that makes for a bad weekend. That doesn't mean it was a lost weekend.
Sunday's events at SunTrust Park...
ATLANTA - Nationals catcher Kurt Suzuki said he felt "some tinglings, zings" in his elbow on a throw to second base in Saturday's game against the Braves. Suzuki was removed from the game and replaced by Raudy Read.
Suzuki underwent an MRI, but results have not been released.
"I just felt something in my elbow," Suzuki said. "One of the things that happens, I guess, in baseball. Some tingling, zings. But just a little sore today. Should be good.
"It's always concerning. Doctors saw me...
ATLANTA - The Nationals scored nine runs and collected 17 hits in the first three games of the series, all losses..
But on Sunday, the Nats tallied nine runs on 17 hits with four home runs, scoring early to set the tone, and finally overcame the Braves 9-4. The win ended the Nats' four-game losing streak and the Braves' nine-game winning streak. The Nats' deficit in the National League East has been trimmed to nine games.
Adam Eaton, Yan Gomes and Juan Soto crushed home runs, one each in the...
ATLANTA - Close to 1,500 days since his last appearance in the major leagues, Aaron Barrett had many a time to dream about returning to the mound in another regular season game.
Aug. 5, 2015 to Sept. 7, 2019.
Rehabbing from Tommy John surgery and then a brutal broken arm, Barrett went through so much to get back. Then on a warm night, six minutes from his offseason home, wearing the jersey of the Nationals again and with his whole family and many of his friends in attendance cheering him on,...
The Nationals finally got off to the quick start manager Davey Martinez had been looking for, with two homers in the first two innings Sunday against the Braves.
Adam Eaton crushed a two-run shot to left-center field in the first inning and Yan Gomes lined a solo homer to left field in the second inning off Braves starter Mike Soroka. For Eaton, it was his 13th; Gomes hit his eighth.
The Nats' 3-0 lead was their first in the series and first time they had scored a run before the fifth inning...
ATLANTA - The Nationals had high hopes when they arrived in Georgia on Wednesday night, hoping to win at least three of four against the Braves and put some heat on the top spot in the National League East with a couple of dozen games left on the schedule.
Three days and three losses later, the Nats turn to ace Max Scherzer to prevent a series sweep. Scherzer certainly is very familiar with the Braves hitters. This will be his 21st start against Atlanta, and he sports a career 9-7 mark with a...
The Washington Nationals selected the contract of catcher Tres Barrera from Double-A Harrisburg on Sunday. Additionally, the Nationals recalled catcher Spencer Kieboom from Double-A Harrisburg and placed him on the 60-day Injured List with right elbow inflammation. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcements.
Barrera, 24, hit .249 with 23 doubles, eight homers, 46 RBI, 36 walks and 42 runs scored in 101 games with Double-A Harrisburg. He...
ATLANTA - Nationals manager Davey Martinez elected to get Adam Eaton back in the lineup tonight for the third game of four at SunTrust Park against the Braves. This will be Eaton's first start since Sept. 2. Eaton is batting second and in right field.
"It'll be nice to get him up there, get him at the top of the order," Martinez said. "Between him and Trea (Turner), get on base, get something going."
Martinez said getting feedback from Eaton last night on how he felt running during the...
ATLANTA - Even the amazing return of Aaron Barrett, solid pitching on short notice from Austin Voth and a clutch hit from Juan Soto would not be enough to overcome an Atlanta Braves team that is on a significant hot streak.
The Braves mustered four homers on the night and rode their starter, Julio Teheran, to a 5-4 win, building their lead in the National League East to double digits. Atlanta has won nine in a row overall and nine of their last 12 games against the Nats.

ATLANTA - Ryan Zimmerman continues to crush baseballs since his return from a second bout of plantar fasciitis in his right foot.
The 34-year-old drilled a three-run homer off of Luke Jackson in the eighth inning Friday night in the Braves' 4-3 win over the Nationals. It was Zimmerman's fifth homer of the season and second in the past five days.
"I feel great," he said. "I think the body feels really good, I feel like I'm moving around pretty well. My first few at-bats, like I said,...
ATLANTA - For the second game in a row, the Nationals had trouble scoring runs against a Braves left-handed starter.
On Thursday night, Max Fried tossed seven shutout innings and struck out nine in a 4-2 Atlanta win.
Friday night, Dallas Keuchel (7-5) kept the Nats off the board for six innings, guiding the Braves to an early 2-0 advantage.
Josh Donaldson added a two-run shot off of Wander Suero in the seventh. The veteran third baseman connected on a curveball.
Ryan Zimmerman unleashed a...
ATLANTA - The Nationals turn to Austin Voth to help get them on the board in their crucial four-game series against the Braves. The right-hander will be making his fifth start of the season tonight at SunTrust Park, and first since July 16. In that win over the Orioles, Voth allowed one run on four hits over six innings.
Voth had looked at video prior to that start in attempt to get better command and velocity on his fastball glove side. It worked.
"I (couldn't) throw away to righties and in...
ATLANTA - Nationals reliever Roenis ElÃas is dealing with a right hamstring injury suffered late in Friday night's opening 4-2 loss against the Braves.
Manager Davey Martinez said they will wait on the MRI until Saturday to check on EliÃas' hamstring.
"He feels OK. He's really sore," Martinez said. "We haven't gotten an MRI yet because until the swelling goes down it's really going to reveal really nothing. Hopefully by the end of the day tomorrow we'll get an MRI."
"I felt a...
ATLANTA - The story in game one was left-hander Max Fried as the Braves defeated the Nationals 4-2. The 25-year-old left-hander, who attended the same high school as former Nats starter Lucas Giolito, tossed seven shutout innings against the Nats, striking out nine.
But once the Nats got past the Harvard-Westlake, Ca., graduate and into the Braves bullpen, they finally put together another familiar comeback, scoring two and bringing the tying run to the plate with two outs in their last at-bat....
ATLANTA - The Nationals turn to their left-handed starter Patrick Corbin tonight as they look to get back in the four-game series against the Braves. Atlanta rode the pitching of their southpaw Max Fried on Friday night to a 4-2 opening win.
Right-hander Stephen Strasburg lasted six innings last night, surrendering only three runs for his 19th quality start in 29 games this season. Corbin is the only Nationals starter with more quality starts (21).
Nationals manager Davey Martinez said...
ATLANTA - The Braves scored early on versus Stephen Strasburg. And with Max Fried putting together one of the best starts of his career, Atlanta held off the Nationals for a 4-2 win Thursday night.
Fried was next to brilliant, firing seven shutout innings, striking out nine and allowing one infield single for his 16th win.
"He was really good, he threw all his pitches for strikes, kept us off balance most of the night," said Nationals manager Davey Martinez. "When you see Juan (Soto) have...
ATLANTA - The Nationals certainly did not help their chances of catching the Braves on Wednesday in an 8-4 loss to the Mets. Atlanta was idle, so the Nats fell a full seven games back of the Braves for the top spot in the National League East standings.
The Braves and Nats match up seven times in the next 10 days beginning with four games starting tonight here at SunTrust Park. The season series is all even at 6-6. The Braves have won six in a row. The Nats lead the NL wild card by three games...
By the time Aaron Barrett walked into the Nationals clubhouse Wednesday morning, his story had already gone viral. While he was calling family members and friends the previous afternoon with the news and making travel arrangements for them to get to D.C. in the next 24 hours, the video clip posted by the Harrisburg Senators of manager Matt LeCroy telling Barrett he was being called up to the big leagues was being shared and liked and viewed 1.2 million times.
Nationals fans already knew...
ATLANTA - The Nationals have looked forward to this series for a while now, even if they would not admit it out loud. The four-game series against the first-place Braves is upon them. But Nationals manager Davey Martinez said his team is repeating the mantra that it cannot get ahead of itself even with only 23 games remaining.
"Trea (Turner) talked about it yesterday - just control today, win today," Martinez said. "Go 1-0 today and go from there."
But with the National League East deficit...
