Right-hander Max Scherzer arrived in Washington last January after pitching the previous five seasons in Detroit, which included winning the American League Cy Young award in 2013. In his first season pitching in the National League since 2009 with the Diamondbacks, Scherzer dominated hitters, tossing two no-hitters and challenging to win another Cy Young. "Last year, I thought I had the upper hand a little bit because it was the first time for me to actually face them," Scherzer told ESPN...

The Orioles will learn plenty about Hyun Soo Kim after he reports to spring training. How he swings the bat against major league pitching, how much ground he covers in the outfield, his arm strength, his ability to blend with his new teammates and get acclimated to life in the United States. The early returns are favorable. Kim made a nice impression on manager Buck Showalter during their brief interaction after he signed his two-year, $7 million contract. Pitcher Mike Wright talked up Kim's...

Can a pitcher who had an ERA of 5.83 last June 20 for Single-A Frederick be considered one of the Orioles' top pitching prospects? He can if he was able to turn his season around to the point where he got a late-season promotion to Double-A Bowie. And then he pitched two huge games in the playoffs to help the Baysox claim the Eastern League championship. Right-hander David Hess, 22, didn't just turn around his season. He pitched so well that he was the O's minor league Pitcher of the Month...

The Orioles released the names of their 17 non-roster invitees to spring training, a list that includes seven pitchers, three catchers, four infielders and three outfielders. There are no real surprises in the group except that infielder Joey Terdoslavich didn't receive an invitation after being designated for assignment and outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk. Keep in mind that everyone on the 40-man roster also will report to the Ed Smith Stadium complex. They don't need invitations. Also be...

The image of top prospect right-hander Lucas Giolito pitching in a Nationals uniform could become even clearer this summer. Giolito paved the way to that end with a very positive 2015 campaign in which he pitched in 21 games, 19 of them starts, for 117 innings. He fired 131 strikeouts and only 37 walks. As expected, Baseball America has him as its top Nationals prospect. No. 1 Lucas Giolito Baseball America editor-in-chief John Manuel says Giolito has a very good shot of pitching for the...

The Orioles' first workout for pitchers and catchers is Feb. 19. The Nationals start a day later. Both teams' pitchers and catchers report on Feb. 18. The Orioles' biggest questions are pitching and right field. The Nationals' new manager, Dusty Baker, will have five new bullpen pitchers and a rotation...

So what is the value of a draft pick? On the one hand, we know that most players that get drafted never make the major leagues - and even some of the highest-drafted players never make it. Look at the first-round picks for just about any draft and check out the number of players that never made it or never did very much in the majors. On the other hand, teams seem to value the picks now more than ever. They don't part with them easily. All organizations value young talent that is on the lower...
