Outfielder L.J. Hoes has cleared waivers and been outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk, the latest roster move made today by the Orioles. Hoes was designated for assignment on Jan. 26 to create room for outfielder/first baseman Efren Navarro. The Orioles acquired Hoes from the Astros on Nov. 25 for cash considerations, bringing back a player they drafted in the third round in 2008. He batted .295/.383/.400 in 99 games with Triple-A Fresno and .267/.313/.267 in eight games with the Astros last...

To make room on the 40-man roster, left-hander C.J. Riefenhauser has been designated for assignment. Despaigne, 28, went 5-9 with a 5.80 ERA (81 earned runs in 125.2 innings pitched) over 34 games (18 starts) with the Padres last season. In 50 career major league games (34 starts), he is...

On Monday, left-hander Gio Gonzalez showed a video on Instagram of his first flat ground throwing session of the new year. It was just some standard warm-up for Gonzalez as he prepares once again for a major role in the Nationals starting rotation in 2016. But yesterday, maybe a more significant video from a Nationals pitcher was posted. Last Sept. 3, reliever Aaron Barrett underwent Tommy John surgery and then had a procedure to repair bone spurs and bone chips in his left ankle on Dec. 3. On...

FanGraphs.com took an in-depth look at the 40-man roster makeup of every Major League Baseball team. The findings show that the Orioles' 40-man roster construction mirrors that of many other teams. FanGraphs lists 11 Orioles as being acquired by the team through the First-Year Player Draft, with the major league average at 12. It lists seven added via free agency (with the MLB average at seven). There are 13 Orioles that were acquired through a trade (average is 14). There are three added via...

He's got pop in his bat and range while manning the hot corner. Unfortunately, third baseman Anthony Rendon was limited to 80 games last season due to injury. However, some experts are saying that Rendon could become a top infielder in the National League in 2016. Rendon certainly showed off his talent in the 2014 season. He scored 111 runs en route to finishing fifth in National League MVP voting and being named a Silver Slugger. So what could be on deck for a healthy Rendon? Hopefully, many...
Trying to find the right answer for right field

As the Orioles attempt to figure out what they're going to do in right field, they seem more likely to go the platoon route to round out their lineup. This isn't exactly breaking news. It's been a strong possibility for a while now, especially after Chris Davis accepted their seven-year, $161 million offer. Justin Upton and Yoenis Cespedes came off the board. I'm still fielding questions about the possibility of bringing back Nick Markakis, but are the Braves willing to move him? And the...

Almost making it into Baseball America's list of the top Nationals prospects was Jose Marmolejos, who smashed the baseball in 2015. The first baseman slashed .310/.363/.485 in 124 games for the low Single-A Hagerstown Suns. He hit 39 doubles, five triples, 11 homers and 87 RBIs. Marmolejos was so good he was honored as the Nationals organizational Offensive Player of the Year. Baseball America editor-in-chief John Manuel said his publication likes what they see from him offensively, but want...

On last week's #TBT post, we watched second baseman Jonathan Schoop absolutely destroy a baseball, sending it 484 feet for a huge homer at Kauffman Stadium. This week, we're looking at a play that's equally as dazzling, but switching gears to the defensive side of things. While he didn't have his healthiest season in 2015, All-Star center fielder Adam Jones continued to make some spectacular grabs. One of his best was against the A's, robbing Coco Crisp. After Jones made the diving snag,...
