I've been asked whether Mike Wright gets another start with the Orioles.
I'm not sure whether he gets another day in the majors.
As I explained yesterday, the Orioles can go in many directions due to the uncertain status of Chris Tillman (back) and Bud Norris (bronchitis) and the presence of Tyler Wilson on the taxi squad.
There must be a temptation to place Norris on the disabled list, backdated to May 11, while he slowly recovers. He was still coughing yesterday and it's obvious by looking...
SAN DIEGO - It's come now to the point where you're left surprised when Bryce Harper doesn't reach base. On Sunday, he did just about everything at the plate, including smacking his National League-leading 14th homer, to help the Nationals to a 10-5 win over the Padres in the series finale.
"Oh, my God? I'm gonna say O-M-G. That's it," Jose Lobaton said. "It's unbelievable. How can you explain that? Go oppo whenever he wants. Pull the ball. Hit a homer. Hit doubles. Triples. I don't...
Don't look now, but Orioles starting pitchers are starting to get on a roll. Mike Wright's Sunday outing was outstanding, but it was only the latest in a series of pretty strong starts by the rotation.
Here are the updated rotation numbers through Sunday:
* Four consecutive quality starts with a rotation ERA of 1.24.
* Six quality starts in the last eight games with an ERA of 2.72.
* Thirteen quality starts the last 18 games with an ERA of 3.10.
O's starters have now pitched seven innings or...
Orioles manager Buck Showalter confirmed that Miguel Gonzalez will start Tuesday night against the Mariners at Camden Yards, and he's leaning toward using Wei-Yin Chen on Wednesday.
What happens to Mike Wright, who won his major league debut today with 7 1/3 scoreless innings in a 3-0 victory over the Angels before 41,733 at Camden Yards?
"Well, he didn't pitch a complete game, so he's out of here," said Showalter.
"No, we'll look at it, we'll start talking about it. We had about three...
Well, that major league debut could not have gone much better for 25-year-old right-hander Mike Wright.
"That is everything you dream of. Really fun. I was a little nervous that first inning, but tried to enjoy it," he said after pitching the Orioles to a 3-0 win over the Los Angeles Angels.
"At times, I had everything working. But as a whole, my slider wasn't there but felt good all together. I felt amazing and 100 percent having that much rest."
Wright's last outing was in Triple-A on...
SAN DIEGO - Stephen Strasburg opened today's game with back-to-back strikeouts. The only problem was that the action on his third strike curveball to Abraham Almonte was so sharp that it skipped behind Jose Lobaton allowing Almonte to reach base safely. Almonte immediately took advantage by stealing second. Then, on the fifth pitch of Matt Kemp's at-bat, Almonte took off for third. Kemp hit a hard grounder up the middle, which Danny Espinosa made a stellar diving stop on. But, by the time...
If Mike Wright was nervous for his major league debut, it sure didn't show.
Trying to pitch the Orioles to a win to avoid a three-game sweep, Wright was sensational this afternoon at Camden Yards as the Orioles beat the Los Angels Angels 3-0 in front of a loud and enthusiastic crowd of 41,733.
Retiring the side in order five times, the 25-year-old right-hander pitched 7 1/3 innings, allowing just three singles and a double with no walks and six strikeouts to get the victory. He threw 90...
Mike Wright recorded his first major league out and strikeout, gave up his first hits and escaped his first jam.
He's packed a lot into four innings for the Orioles.
Wright retired the first nine batters before Kole Calhoun led off the fourth inning with a single. Didn't Calhoun do the same thing to Ubaldo Jimenez last night?
Albert Pujols doubled with one out to put two runners in scoring position, but the game remains in a scoreless tie. Erick Aybar grounded to Manny Machado, who threw home...
SAN DIEGO - Right-hander Stephen Strasburg is set to make his second career start in his home city. Strasburg attended West Hills High School and San Diego St. University, where the Nationals drafted him from with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft.
Strasburg's only start at Petco Park came on May 16, 2013 when he claimed the win after allowing just one earned run on three hits with four strikeouts in eight innings.
The 26-year-old has been slow to find his groove this...
Mike Wright sat alone behind the Orioles' dugout this morning and read a book. Empty stands, empty field, clear mind.
Maybe it's a relaxation technique for Wright, who's making his major league debut today against the Angels. Maybe he just wanted to find a quiet spot and soak up the atmosphere.
Wright hasn't pitched since May 6 for Triple-A Syracuse, which could cause his sinker to elevate if he's too strong. It happened last night to closer Zach Britton. But manager Buck Showalter...
