Minor league notes on Brandon Snyder, Parker Bridwell, Delmarva pitching and more

Orioles
The Orioles signed Brandon Snyder to a minor league contract this week and he made his return to the Orioles organization yesterday after an extended absence when he joined the Double-A Bowie Baysox. The O's drafted Snyder in the first round of the 2005 draft, and he's in today's Baysox lineup for the 4:05 p.m. game at Erie, batting fifth and playing first base. Snyder played his last game in the O's organization in 2011 and last played for the Baysox in 2009. He spent the last two seasons...

It is exciting to see one of the Nationals' top prospects, A.J. Cole, get a shot tonight and a chance to stop his club's longest losing streak of the season in his major league debut. I remember saying hello to the tall, lanky and quiet right-hander at a minor league game a couple of seasons ago. He was charting pitches, and was cool and calm, just like he is on the mound. It all starts with Cole's difference-making fastball, plus a changeup and an improving slider. Baseball America...

The Orioles are hoping to play today's game against the White Sox with a 4 p.m. first pitch at Camden Yards, but a final decision is pending. The 10 p.m. curfew that begins tonight eliminated the possibility of playing at 7:05 p.m. The Orioles are examing all the possibilities, including another postponement and relocating to a different venue. The Orioles have been in steady contact with Major League Baseball and city and state officials to determine the best course of action. It would seem...

Nationals
It's been a tough week for Nationals fans. Following a series loss against the Cardinals, the Nats arrived in Miami to face the Marlins. Even though Miami has one of the best sluggers in baseball, Giancarlo Stanton, who is just starting to get hot, many doubted the Marlins had the fire to win against the Nats. Coming off the week they just had where they won five out of six, you'd think the Nationals would have a chance to win the series or even sweep the Marlins. Wrong. The Marlins took the...

ATLANTA - The Atlanta Braves are still paying Nationals second baseman Dan Uggla a lot of money, $13 million dollars to be exact this season. The remaining loot is part of a five-year deal Uggla inked back with the Braves in 2011. Uggla's performance, especially at the plate, submarined gradually and the Braves finally released him last summer. The three-time All-Star entered last night's game in the fifth inning to a sea of boos from the small but boisterous crowd at Turner Field. More...

ATLANTA - It actually can get worse. On a night the where Nationals racked up as many errors as runs in an 8-4 loss to the Braves, most of the postgame clubhouse chatter surrounded a questionable play in the fifth inning that knocked third baseman Yunel Escobar from the game. I guess it's better than talking about why they only managed four hits on Braves starter Eric Stults, who brought a 4.50 ERA into the game. Either way, in the fifth inning, starter Doug Fister launched a pickoff attempt...

Some things are more important than baseball. Actually, lots of things are more important than baseball. But baseball is what we're here to discuss, though it's worth noting the O's situation at home this week is up in the air. So while hoping for the best in Baltimore, let's get to it. At 9-10, the Orioles are treading water in a division full of teams that are treading water. So far, every American League East team has at least nine wins and is within a few games of either first or last...

The Orioles are supposed to play the White Sox tonight, just as they were scheduled to do last night before the postponement caused by rioting in the city. Another adjustment must be made. It's just a question of how it's done. I'm no longer comfortable using the term "protesters" because it's insulting to the people who tried to have a peaceful demonstration. You can come up with your own descriptions for the individuals who chose the path of violence and destruction, who burned the city...
