NEW YORK - After last night's game, Mets manager Terry Collins provided what I thought was an incredibly accurate description of how Doug Fister goes about his business. "Doug throws what he wants, when he wants, where he wants," Collins told reporters. Yeah, that pretty much hits the nail on the head. And it's quite a compliment, if you ask me. Fister is now 12-3 on the season. In his last four outings, he's thrown at least seven innings without allowing an earned run three times....

How about Doug Fister, right?!? Despite a delayed start to the 2014 season due to a strained lat muscle, the right-handed starting pitcher has made his mark on the National League. Fister made his major league debut in 2009 with the Seattle Mariners and became a solid back-of-the-rotation guy. Since then, Fister has made his mark on three variations of Tigers playoff teams before coming to Washington in exchange for Steve Lombardozzi, Ian Krol and Robbie Ray in December 2013. And while this...

When Matt Wieters was lost to a season-ending elbow injury in the second week of May this year, it appeared to be a crushing blow for the Orioles, who had relied heavily upon the skilful catcher both with the bat and behind the plate for the previous five seasons. A three-time All-Star, Wieters was a fan favorite in Baltimore and had started 2014 on a tear, hitting .308/.339/.839 with five home runs and 18 RBIs in just 26 games. His injury dampened the spirits of Birdland and there was a...

Jinx alert. About to write about the Orioles beating up on the Yankees this year and what it could mean. Those that believe in jinxes should probably check out right about now. But for the rest of you... The Orioles are 7-3 this season against the Yankees. If they win just three of the remaining nine games between these teams, the Orioles will take the season series from New York for the first time since 1997 when they went 8-4. The Orioles went 9-9 versus New York in 2007 and 2012. But they...

NEW YORK - Michael A. Taylor collected his first major league hit in his major league debut. He also ripped his first home run. And it all came in a 7-1 win. Decent little night. Taylor, called up from minors on Sunday, got his first taste of big league ball tonight with Jayson Werth sidelined with a shoulder injury, and the 23-year-old provided one of four Nationals home runs. Bryce Harper and Ian Desmond also delivered two-run shots, and Anthony Rendon added a solo homer, as the Nats cruised...

The Orioles will provide more information today on Manny Machado's MRI results and the condition of his right knee. They're expected to place their third baseman on the 15-day disabled list after he was diagnosed with a sprained ligament. Triple-A Norfolk infielder Cord Phelps is in Baltimore and waiting to have his contract purchased. The Orioles signed him off waivers from the Indians on Nov. 25. The Orioles can't go into tonight's game without Machado and shortstop J.J. Hardy, whose...

We've got both a no-doubt-about-it home run and a memorable first in the second inning. As a result, the Nationals have a 2-0 lead and rookie outfielder Michael A. Taylor has his first major league hit. Bryce Harper took care of the firepower, crushing a two-run homer to left field after Rafael Montero had walked Ian Desmond to lead off the frame. It's the fifth home run of the season for Harper. After Wilson Ramos struck out, Taylor bounced a single up the middle, his first hit coming in his...

The Orioles announced that third baseman Manny Machado has been diagnosed with a right knee ligament sprain. An update on Machado's condition, including how long he could be sidelined, will be provided on Wednesday. Executive vice president Dan Duquette said putting Machado on the 15-day disabled list is "under consideration right now." "We need to get more information on it," Duquette said. "Manny was feeling good later last night, so we'll see. There will be some work he has to do...

Right fielder Jayson Werth departed the Nationals clubhouse at Citi Field this afternoon to have his sore right shoulder checked out by a physician. The Nationals are trying to schedule an MRI to determine the severity of the inflammation in the AC joint and to make sure there's nothing further wrong with the shoulder. "We're just going to get him checked by the doc," manager Matt Williams told reporters during his pregame briefing. "He was OK the other day, playing that last game in...
