Double-A Bowie's Caleb Joseph began this year as the Baysox's third catcher and as a player that was expected to get most of his at-bats between designated hitter, first base and left field.
But Joseph's hot start at the plate had the Orioles re-evaluating a few things. Joseph is back catching almost full time for now and expected to get the bulk of the catcher innings at Bowie beginning immediately.
After going 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles while catching last night, the 26-year-old...
The Orioles will place backup catcher Taylor Teagarden on the disabled list today with a dislocated left thumb. They're not going to make an announcement until his replacement gets to Oakland.
The corresponding move would figure to involve Triple-A Norfolk's Luis Exposito, who's on the 40-man roster. Chris Robinson is not, and he caught last night for the Tides. He probably would have been scratched if the Orioles intended to select his contract.
Caleb Joseph was behind the plate last...
In his postgame interview today on MASN, Orioles manager Buck Showalter told Gary Thorne that Taylor Teagarden is likely headed for a stint on the disabled list.
Teagarden left today's game when he took a foul ball that dislocated his left thumb in the last of the sixth inning. Teagarden quickly removed his mitt and headed toward the O's dugout.
"It is just a matter of when the soreness and the swelling abates and it gets down to a point where he can catch," Showalter said. "He's going...
In Oakland today, the Orioles lost a catcher, but won another game. Taylor Teagarden suffered a dislocated thumb on his left hand in the sixth inning and exited the Orioles' 7-3 win over Oakland.
It is possible that Teagarden will now head to the disabled list and that Luis Exposito, who is on the 40-man roster, could be recalled from Triple-A Norfolk.
Meanwhile, with today's win, the Orioles have now won four games in a row at Oakland (counting the last one last year) for the first time...
Dan Haren put up his best start as a National this afternoon, allowing just two runs over six innings in the Nationals' 6-3 win over the Reds.
With his patented brutally honest perspective, however, Haren couldn't help but take a jab at himself when discussing his outing with reporters after the game.
"It sucks it's taken so long to have a good outing, but I finally feel like part of the team," Haren said. "I've got to be like this or better the rest of the year. There's no excuse for...
Orioles backup catcher Taylor Teagarden exited today's game in the bottom of the sixth inning after taking a foul tip off his left thumb.
Teagarden removed his mitt and immediately headed to the dugout. There was no hesitation.
The thumb obviously isn't exposed, but the foul ball from Josh Donaldson still created an injury situation.
Donaldson has been a pest today. Two RBIs, one injured catcher.
Teagarden's departure is complicated by Matt Wieters serving as the designated hitter today....
Over his first four outings this season, Dan Haren had failed to record an out in the sixth and had surrendered 32 hits and four walks over 18 1/3 mediocre innings.
This afternoon, Haren turned things around, holding the dangerous Reds at bay. The veteran righty allowed two runs on six hits over six strong innings, walking none and striking out five.
"That was more like him," manager Davey Johnson said. "Just like what we were talking about before, he was still throwing with plenty of...
Manny Machado extended his hitting streak to six games today, reaching on a bunt single with one out in the top of the first inning.
I won't dare suggest that it was a "perfect" bunt. I did that once this season on a Machado sacrifice and was shouted down in the comments section.
Machado didn't keep the ball on the ground, ending his quest for perfection, but he sailed it past diving Oakland Athletics pitcher A.J. Griffin, who decided to cushion his fall with his face.
Once the ball...
It wasn't that long ago that Buck Showalter said he felt playing 20 games in 20 days - a stretch the Orioles are currently in the middle of - could be a good thing for the starting pitchers.
He figured getting the pitchers working on an every-fifth-day routine would be a good thing and perhaps recent results prove he was right about that.
Over the last seven games, O's starters have produced five quality starts for their best stretch of the season. The starters' ERA is 3.19 in the seven...
Five outings into his Nationals tenure, Dan Haren has his first quality start.
After a rough start to the season, Haren bounced back with a nice outing today against a high-powered Reds lineup.
Haren went six innings, allowing two runs on six hits. He walked none and struck out five, throwing 88 pitches, 56 for strikes.
With Haren's pitch count still fairly low, manager Davey Johnson could've opted to send his veteran right-hander out for the seventh, but Johnson is a fan of having his...
