Following a month in which he hit .299 (29-for-97) with five doubles, one triple, five homers, 15 RBI, 16 walks and 18 runs scored in 25 games, Nationals outfielder Juan Soto was named the National League Rookie of the Month for the second consecutive month on Thursday. Major League Baseball made the announcement on MLB Network.
Soto, 19, led National League rookies in batting average (.299), on-base percentage (.398), slugging percentage (.526), OPS (.924), hits (29), RBI (15) and walks (16). His five home runs for the month rank tied for first with Atlanta’s Ronald Acuña Jr. He hit safely in 17 of the 25 games and reached base safely in 21 of the 25 games during the month of July.
The highlights of Soto’s second full month in the Major Leagues include his performance on July 26 at Miami, when he went 2-for-3 with one home run, one RBI and two runs scored in addition to being intentionally walked twice. He became the first teenager in Major League history to hit one home run and be intentionally walked twice in the same game. His July performance included homering in three straight games from July 26 through July 28, making him the only teenager in Major League history to homer in three consecutive games.
Soto’s back-to-back National League Rookie of the Month Awards for June and July mark the second time a Nationals player has won back-to-back monthly awards this season, joining Max Scherzer’s National League Pitcher of the Month awards for April and May. He becomes the second player in Nationals history to win back-to-back Rookie of the Month Awards, joining Trea Turner (Aug., Sept./Oct., 2016). Soto joins Cody Belinger (May, June 2017) and Aaron Judge (April, May, June 2017) in winning back-to-back Rookie of the Month honors in the past two seasons.
This award marks the seventh award taken home by a Nationals player so far in 2018. In addition to Soto’s first Rookie of the Month award, Scherzer’s Pitcher of the Month (April, May) and Player of the Week (April 16) awards, Adam Eaton (April 2) and Mark Reynolds (July 9) won National League Player of the Week Awards.
This award is the seventh National League Rookie of the Month award in Nationals history (2005-pres.), Soto’s June award, as well as Trea Turner (Sept./Oct. 2016, Aug. 2016), Bryce Harper (Sept./Oct. 2012, May 2012) and Ryan Church (May 2005).
