Desmond named Nationals' nominee for 2014 Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet

Major League Baseball and Chevrolet, the official vehicle of MLB, announced that
Ian Desmond was named the Washington Nationals' 2014 nominee for the prestigious
Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet. Desmond is one of the 30 Club
finalists for the annual Award, which recognizes a Major League Baseball player
who best represents the game of baseball through positive contributions on and
off the field, including sportsmanship and community involvement.

During the pregame ceremony on Tuesday, September 23, Desmond will be recognized
for his work in youth baseball along with his END NF campaign that raised
awareness and funds for neurofibromatosis. Two representatives from Chevrolet
will present Desmond with his award and will be joined by members from The House
DC, a facility that aims to transform and empower the lives of inner-city youth.

Each Club nominates one player to be considered for the Roberto Clemente Award
presented by Chevrolet in an effort to pay tribute to Clemente's achievements
and character by recognizing current players who truly understand the value of
helping others. Wednesday, September 17, marked the thirteenth annual Roberto
Clemente Day, which was established by Major League Baseball to honor Clemente's
legacy and to officially recognize local Club nominees of the Roberto Clemente
Award presented by Chevrolet and to honor Clemente's legacy. The 15-time MLB
All-Star and Hall of Famer died in a plane crash on New Year's Eve 1972 while
attempting to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

Desmond's Ian's Academy All Stars is a once-a-month initiative that brings 30
scholar-athletes from the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy - where
Ian sits on the Board of Directors - to Nationals Park for an opportunity to
attend batting practice, meet with him and enjoy the game. In addition to his
youth baseball outreach, Desmond launched a campaign in May 2014 during
Neurofibromatosis Month to help eradicate the disease. In just one month, the
#ENDNF campaign raised more than $32,000 for the Children's Tumor Fund and NF
awareness.

"We are proud to nominate Ian for this award because he is genuinely engaged in
making a difference and touching lives on a very personal level," said Shawn
Bertani, Senior Director of Community Relations for the Nationals. "He
epitomizes the spirit of the Roberto Clemente award and serves as an example to
his teammates and fans, on and off the field."
