The Washington Nationals reinstated right-handed pitcher Max Scherzer from the 10-day Injured List and placed right-handed pitcher Kyle Finnegan on the 10-day Injured List (retroactive to June 21) with a left hamstring strain on Tuesday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement. Scherzer, 36, will start Tuesday night's series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies. His last full start came on June 4 against the Phillies before being removed from his start on June 11 against the San Francisco Giants. Scherzer was placed on the 10-day Injured List on June 15 with groin inflammation. Scherzer is 5-4 with a 2.21 ERA in 13 starts for the Nationals this season. He ranks among National League pitchers in strikeouts per 9.0 innings (3rd, 12.10), strikeout-to-walk ratio (T3rd, 6.93), opponents' on-base percentage (4th, .233), ERA (6th, 2.21), strikeouts (T6th, 104), and opponents' batting average (7th, .179). Finnegan, 29, is 3-2 with a 3.86 ERA in 33 games out of Washington's bullpen this season.
