Nationals select right-hander Jacob Turner

The Washington Nationals selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Jacob Turner from Triple-A Syracuse and placed right-handed pitcher Stephen Strasburg on the paternity list. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

Turner, 25, joins the Nationals after pitching to a 2.61 ERA in three starts with Triple-A Syracuse this season. A Non-Roster Invitee to Washington's 2017 Major League Spring Training, Turner has a career 12-27 record with a 5.09 ERA in 79 career Major League games.

A former first-round selection in the 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft (Detroit Tigers, No. 9 overall), Turner began the 2016 season with Triple-A Charlotte before joining the Chicago White Sox in July and remaining with them for the duration of the season. Appearing in 18 games for the White Sox, Turner recorded a 51.2 ground-ball rate and posted a 3.12 ERA while going 1-1 with two holds in 16 relief appearances.

Strasburg, 28, is 2-0 with a 2.89 ERA in four starts this season. He and his wife, Rachel, are expecting their second child.
