Nats react to Teddy winning

Teddy Roosevelt winning the Presidents' Race was the highlight of the afternoon for many Nationals fans. Ryan Zimmerman does not fit into that group of people. "I am so glad Teddy won so we can stop talking about Teddy," an exasperated Zimmerman said after today's 5-1 Nats win. "People get more excited for a mascot race than a game." Zimmerman then gave a massive eye-roll and cranked the sarcasm meter to the limit. "Yes, I'm excited Teddy won," he said. "I'm ecstatic." Jayson Werth, who has had a few run-ins with the Presidents' Race mascots over the years in an effort to get Teddy a first-place finish, gave a subdued reaction to the outcome of today's race. "I guess it marks the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter in Nats baseball," Werth said. "I think I said last year that it's going to be tough to win without Teddy winning, but I guess he was waiting for us." Teddy was aided by a mini Phillie Phanatic during today's race, who knocked over the other three presidents, allowing Teddy to pick up the win. Werth was asked if he had snuck into the Phanatic costume in between innings. "I'm way taller," he responded. Shortstop Ian Desmond seemed to enjoy that Teddy had finally won a race, at least for the fans' sake. He posted on Twitter after the game advocating that the highlights of the race make SportsCenter's Top 10 plays of the day. "It was good. I think the crowd liked it," Desmond said. "We'll see who wins ... the next game."
