Nats recall Taylor Jordan for long relief support

The Nationals recalled right-hander Taylor Jordan from Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday morning. The 26-year-old Jordan is 1-2 with a 2.14 ERA (10 earned runs in 42 innings) in seven starts for Syracuse this season. Jordan has held opposing hitters to a lowly .208 batting average while striking out 26 and walking only eight.

The Nationals selected Jordan in the ninth-round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft. He made his major league debut in 2013. Jordan holds a 1-6 career record with a 4.31 ERA in 14 games in the majors.

To make room for Jordan, the Nationals optioned rookie A.J. Cole to Syracuse. After being shelled in his big league debut in a start on April 28, Cole returned to the Nats on May 15 to pitch out of the bullpen. The right-hander allowed just two earned runs in 7 1/3 innings pitched over two appearances in the relief role.

With right-hander Tanner Roark scheduled to make his first start tomorrow against the Cubs and Cole having thrown 4 1/3 innings yesterday, the Nats were in need of a fresh arm in the bullpen that could provide long inning relief if needed.
