Nats throttle Twins 7-0 in Game 1 of doubleheader

Boy, did they need this. The Nationals' bats exploded in a five-run fifth inning, they got seven scoreless innings from Jordan Zimmermann, and they beat the Twins 7-0 in the first game of today's split doubleheader. Led by Ian Desmond, who had three hits and two RBIs, the Nationals pounded out 14 hits and turned a scoreless game after three innings into a seven-run game after five. Anthony Rendon drove in three, Jeff Kobernus had his first two major league hits, and the top seven starters in the Nats' batting order went a combined 13-for-27 with three walks and six RBIs. Zimmermann was tremendous yet again, striking out eight and allowing just two hits over his seven scoreless frames. His ERA drops to 2.00 with his effort today, and he's now 9-3 on the season. The Nats are back to a game under .500 and will give the ball to Nathan Karns in a couple hours with a chance to take the series from the visiting Twins. Catch that game on MASN HD at 7:05 p.m.
