Span, Zimmerman sit; Nats recall den Dekker (with lineups)

Major League Baseball rules allow teams to add a 26th man to their rosters for the second game of doubleheaders scheduled less than 48 hours in advance. The Nationals chose to recall outfielder Matt den Dekker from Triple-A Syracuse this afternoon to fill that spot for Game 2 tonight.

den-Dekker-Nats-Hitting-White-Tall.jpgden Dekker was on the Nationals' opening day roster, going 0-for-2 while appearing in four games at the start of the season. Once Jayson Werth returned from the disabled list after shoulder surgery, den Dekker was optioned to Syracuse, where he has hit .230 (35-for-152) with one homer, six doubles and 16 RBIs. His only major league homer came at Nats Park in 2013 when he was with the Mets.

Denard Span remains out of the lineup as he continues to nurse his sore right knee. Rookie Michael A. Taylor again starts for Span in center field. Taylor was 1-for-4 with three strikeouts in the first game of the doubleheader.

Ryan Zimmerman is out of the Nats lineup for the first time this season. Zimmerman has been bothered by plantar fasciitis at times this year. He drove in the Nats' second run in Game 1 on a sacrifice fly.

Tyler Moore will start in place of Zimmerman at first. Moore collected a hit in four at-bats while playing left field in the first game.
