Stephen Strasburg named National League Pitcher of the Month

Following a month in which he went 5-0 with a 1.14 ERA (4 ER/31.2 IP) and 44 strikeouts with just seven walks and zero home runs allowed in five starts, Washington Nationals right-handed pitcher Stephen Strasburg was named National League Pitcher of the Month for July on Saturday. Major League Baseball made the announcement on MLB Network.

In the month of July, Strasburg ranked among National League pitchers in home runs allowed per 9.0 IP (T1st, 0.00), opponents' slugging percentage (2nd, .259), strikeouts (T3rd, 44), ERA (3rd, 1.14), strikeouts per 9.0 IP (3rd, 12.51), WHIP (4th, 0.92), strikeout-to-walk ratio (4th, 6.29) and opponents' batting average (5th, .190).

Strasburg kicked off the month by striking out a season-high 14 batters in 7.1 shutout innings on July 3 against the Miami Marlins. He allowed just two hits and issued two walks in the 3-1 Nationals victory. He went on to allow one earned run or less in four of his five starts during the month.

On July 18 at Atlanta, Strasburg helped his cause by clubbing his fourth career home run and driving in a career-high five runs while going 3-for-3 in Washington's 13-4 victory over the Braves.

With his Major League leading 14th win on July 28 against the Dodgers, Strasburg has now earned a win in seven consecutive starts, the longest such streak of his career. During the streak, Strasburg has posted a 2.22 ERA with 53 strikeouts, 10 walks and just one home run allowed.
