A few workout notes

SARASOTA, Fla. - I tore myself away from the back fields to pass along a few notes from the workout, which began at noon and is expected to run until 3 p.m.. Minor league catcher Caleb Joseph beat the other players onto the field for the pre-workout stretch, but Matt Wieters was close behind him. Twenty-nine of the 30 pitchers are in camp today, the obvious exception being Alfredo Simon. All six catchers are here. Brian Roberts passed his physical and walked onto Field 4 to greet manager Buck Showalter. Roberts was wearing shorts and a T-shirt and carrying two bats, a glove and a bottled water. Few things get past me. Showalter is walking around in a black windbreaker and carrying a fungo bat. Even during one drill where he rolled the ball to the pitchers, that bat stayed in his right hand. We've got about 19 members of the Japanese media following Koji Uehara. Kevin Gregg is wearing No. 63 and it suits him, since he looks like an offensive lineman. Pretty big guy. I'm standing behind him if a fight breaks out. Pitcher Luis Lebron, who underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow on May 11, is considered healthy and participating in drills. However, his innings will likely be limited in major league camp. Minor league infielder/outfielder Tyler Henson reported early.
