Beating Nats again a challenge for Orioles in replay only

The Orioles knew they were destined to win tonight after going 3-for-3 on challenges within the first three innings. They finally got some love up in New York.

Calls were reversed and the Orioles' success against the Nationals stayed the same, with Kevin Gausman tossing six scoreless innings in an 8-1 victory before 26,697 at Camden Yards.

Chris Davis hit his 30th home run with two outs in the eighth to complete the scoring.

The Orioles (69-56) swept the two-game series and went 3-5 on the homestand. They're taking a bus to D.C. tonight for another two-game set.

Mark Trumbo halted his home run streak with an RBI single in the first inning and another single in the third off Nats rookie Reynaldo Lopez. Adam Jones was 3-for-3 in the first three innings, as Lopez stumbled through his fifth major league start.

Jones went 4-for-5, his 19th career four-hit game and third this season.

Gausman threw 27 pitches in the first inning, but he stranded two runners and was aided by the first reversed call - which would look exactly like the second one. His full body of work included six hits, two walks, two strikeouts and 110 pitches, his ERA lowered from 4.11 to 3.92.

Twice in three innings, Trea Turner thought he swiped second base and was told otherwise after manager Buck Showalter challenged the calls. In both instances, Jonathan Schoop made sensational catches and tags in displays of athleticism that will draw raves later from Showalter.

The other reversal came in the bottom of the third when Jones was ruled out at first base before being awarded his second infield hit.

The Rockies (April 9) and Mets (July 26) also had three successful challenges in the same game this season.

Vance Worley replaced Gausman and gave up four straight hits in the seventh, but only one run scored due to Clint Robinson getting thrown out at third base and Manny Machado making a backhanded stop of Jayson Werth's grounder behind the bag to start a 5-4-3 double play.

Worley worked the final three innings, allowing only the one run while picking up his first save. He won't be the long reliever behind Wade Miley on Wednesday and he's no longer be a candidate to start Thursday if Chris Tillman is sidelined by a sore shoulder.

The Orioles took a 1-0 lead in the first on Trumbo's hit - he was out trying for a double - and a 3-0 lead in the second on Wieters' RBI double after failing to lay down a bunt and Jones' initial infield hit.

Lopez was done in the third after second baseman Daniel Murphy's two-out fielding error allowed two runs to score. Schoop had an RBI double earlier in the inning.

Pedro Alvarez doubled off Oliver Perez with two outs in the seventh inning and scored on Wieters' single. Alvarez was 5-for-29 against left-handers before the double, and Wieters was 15-for-78 (.192).

The Orioles remain two games out of first place in the American League East.
