Bundy allows four home runs in first without an out (O's lose 15-7)

Add Dylan Bundy to the list of Orioles concerns.

Bundy-Throws-White-Sidebar.jpgBundy served up four home runs tonight and didn't record an out in his start against the Royals, who sent 14 batters to the plate in the first inning and took a 10-0 lead.

Mike Wright Jr. replaced Bundy and allowed three runs on four singles. Fans let loose a sarcastic cheer as Lucas Duda grounded out against the shift for the final out.

The inning took 26 minutes to complete. Bundy was done after seven batters and 28 pitches.

No other pitcher has allowed four home runs in a game without recording an out, according to Stats by STATS. Bundy has surrendered nine in his last three starts after giving up only one in his first five.

Bundy's ERA over that period has climbed from 1.42 to 5.31. He's allowed 19 earned runs (22 total) and 23 hits in nine-plus innings.

Questions about his health will be raised following the game.

Tonight marks the first time that the Royals plated 10 runs in the first inning since 2006 against the Indians. They lost 15-13.

The four home runs in one inning ties the Royals record. It also happened on May 26, 2000 against the Angels in the sixth and June 29, 2001 at Cleveland in the fourth.

The night began with the Royals ranked 28th in the majors with 29 home runs. Jon Jay led off with an infield hit and Jorge Soler launched a changeup into the Orioles bullpen. Mike Moustakas and Salvador Perez followed with home runs, as Kansas City went back-to-back-to-back.

Moustakas' ball became the 95th in Camden Yards history to land on Eutaw St. and the 55th by an opponent. He added a two-run single off Wright later in the inning.

Lucas Duda walked on four pitches, Whit Merrifield walked and Alex Gordon blasted a three-run homer to end Bundy's night.

Bundy's start conjures up memories of Russ Ortiz's outing with the Orioles on July 21, 2006 at Tropicana Field, when he failed to retire a batter and allowed six runs on five hits. He surrendered only one home run, to Carl Crawford, and faced only six batters before Adam Loewen replaced him in a 14-7 loss to the Devil Rays.

Alcides Escobar, Jay, Soler and Moustakas singled off Wright. Perez lifted a sacrifice fly.

The Orioles have been outscored 50-11 in the first inning this season.

Chris Davis led off the bottom of the second inning with his third home run and the first since April 19. He was 1-for-13 with six strikeouts against left-hander Danny Duffy before the at-bat.

The ball traveled an estimated 421 feet to right field.

The Orioles have a long way to go to overtake the Royals.

Update: Moustakas hit a two-run homer off Rule 5 pick Pedro Araujo in the fifth to increase the lead to 13-1. Mike Wright Jr. is charged with five runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. He threw 80 pitches, 54 for strikes.

Moustakas has his eighth career multi-homer game, plus his two-run single.

Update II: Ryan Goins' two-run single off Araujo in the sixth increased the lead to 15-1.

Update III: Danny Valencia and Caleb Joseph homered in the eighth to reduce the lead to 15-3.

Update IV: Jonathan Schoop had a two-run single in the ninth off Blaine Boyer after Jace Peterson walked and Craig Gentry doubled, and the Orioles put up four runs in a 15-7 loss.

Mark Trumbo singled after Schoop's hit. Boyer finally retired Davis on a comebacker, but Valencia delivered a sacrifice fly and Anthony Santander followed with an RBI single.

The Orioles are 8-27 and have lost 13 of their last 15 games.
