Coaching decisions could come quickly

I usually rely on him to eat the crumbs off my shirt. Third base umpire Jerry Crawford is working his last regular season game. He's retiring after the playoffs. Manager Buck Showalter took the lineup card to home plate, which is unusual after the first game of a series, because he wanted to honor Crawford. "Jerry's been pretty special to work with over the years," Showalter said. "He cares." Tigers right fielder Brennan Boesch butchered Robert Andino's fly ball in the bottom of the first, playing it into a double, and Andino scored on Luke Scott's one-out single. That's 72 RBIs for Scott. Showalter will meet with his coaches tomorrow. He'll fly home Wednesday or Thursday and undergo two knee surgeries, with a return trip to Baltimore in between the procedures. He'll come back here after the second surgery. "I plan on spending as much time here as Andy (MacPhail) and Peter (Angelos) need me to," he said. Showalter said he has a date in mind when he'll notify the coaches of their futures. We're talking days, not weeks, before it happens. "It's not a matter of waiting around for somebody else," he said. "I think in fairness to them, we're going to try to move as fast as we can with that. It could be very quickly. The sooner, the better, as far as I'm concerned, but we want to make good decisions, too. It could move real fast." Showalter's still searching for a home here. "We're looking," he said. "If you have any ideas, let me know. The problem is, we have four dogs, so the condo thing doesn't work."
