Gio wiggles out of early jam; Rendon delivers (Brewers win 5-2)

Now that's how you walk the tightrope.

Left-hander Gio Gonzalez allowed a double, a walk and a passed ball in the first inning, but his quick glove ended a big Brewers threat and kept the game scoreless.

Aaron Hill doubled and two batters later, with men on second and third, Chris Carter's hot shot line drive back to the mound was stabbed out of the air by Gonzalez to end the inning.

In the bottom of the second inning, Daniel Murphy blooped a single to left-center field. Two batters later, Anthony Rendon laced an RBI single to left field and the Nationals lead 1-0.

After two innings, the Nats are ahead of the Brewers, 1-0.

Update: Jonathan Villar doubled with one out in the third. He came home on Hill's RBI single. The game is tied 1-1 after three innings.

Update II: Jonathan Lucroy led off with a single in the sixth. One batter later, Hernan Perez launched a two-run shot to right to give the Brewers a 3-1 lead.

Update III: Gonzalez finished six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, with three walks and four strikeouts. He threw 102 pitches, 57 for strikes.

Against Blake Treinen in the top of the seventh, Zach Davies reached on a missed catch error by Ryan Zimmerman. One batter later, Hill crushed a 1-0 offering for his eighth homer, a two-run shot to make it 5-1 Brewers. Hill has a walk, a single, a double and a homer in four at-bats, with three RBIs.

Update IV: Ben Revere delivered a run-scoring single with two outs in the seventh. After Jayson Werth walked to load the bases, Bryce Harper looked at a called third strike from Will Smith to end the inning. After seven frames, the Brewers lead the Nationals, 5-2.

Update V: Rendon and Danny Espinosa singled to lead off the bottom of the ninth, but a 1-6-3 double play by pinch-hitter Clint Robinson slowed the rally. Revere grounded out to first to end the game. Jeremy Jeffress, making his third consecutive appearance, earned his 23rd save.

Final score: Brewers 5, Nationals 2.
