Golden grab (updated twice)

Jeremy Guthrie gave up a run in the top of the first inning on a leadoff double by Jose Reyes and one-out single by David Wright. The damage would have increased if not for a spectacular diving catch by Adam Jones in left-center field that robbed Jason Bay. Wright would have scored easily. Bay might have joined him if the ball got past Jones. My second-favorite moment of the game: Tejada making a nice stop on Tejada's grounder in the hole, but Tejada's late throw allows Tejada to reach base. Pay close attention because it could happen again. Most of the Orioles have never faced Mets knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, a former first-round pick of the Rangers who has done more traveling than a Southwest pilot. Corey Patterson isn't sure how to prepare for a knuckler. He's heard players suggest that he should try to hit home runs, but that's not the best advice for him. "Me, personally, that doesn't work," he told me before the game. "I just try to keep my same approach, as if it was someone throwing a fastball between 89 and 91 mph. I don't really try to change anything. Just try to put a good swing on it. Don't try to over-swing or swing too easy." Patterson struck out in his first at-bat. Better luck next time. Update: Guthrie has retired eight in a row. Switch-hitting Cesar Izturis is batting from the right side against Dickey. Didn't he do the same thing against Tim Wakefield? Sounds familiar. Update II: Chris Carter hit a three-run homer off Guthrie in the fourth to give the Mets a 4-0 lead. All he does is score touchdowns. He never hits home runs. The Orioles loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fourth, but two strikeouts and a pop up ended that threat with a sickening thud. I guess it's hard to hit a ball traveling 70 mph with no spin. Dickey actually throws a harder knuckler than the others, for what that's worth.
