Gonzalez unable to find the plate, allows grand slam (Nats fall 11-0)

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Left-hander Gio Gonzalez got through the first inning allowing only a walk.

In the second inning, his night fell apart. Gonzalez could not find the plate, issuing four walks, including three walks in a row to the bottom of the Rays order. A wild pitch scored C.J. Cron. A walk to Willy Adames scored Jake Bauers.

Then the biggest hit of the game came off the bat of Kevin Kiermaier, who crushed a 3-2 pitch over the center field wall for a grand slam. It was his first homer of the season.

gio-gonzalez-front-on-gray.jpgGonzalez lasted one inning plus seven batters, his shortest start of the season. He gave up six runs on three hits with five walks, a wild pitch and two strikeouts. Gonzalez threw 62 pitches, 29 for strikes.

Rays left-hander Blake Snell has not allowed the Nationals a hit through three innings. They did get back-to-back walks to Trea Turner and Bryce Harper to begin the game, but nothing else. Snell has five strikeouts.

The Rays scored another run in the third on a pair of base hits and a wild pitch by Justin Miller.

After three innings, the Rays lead the Nats 7-0.

Update: Wilson Ramos hit a solo homer against his former team. It came on the first pitch from Miller in the fourth.

The Nats are without a hit in the first five innings.

After five innings, the Rays lead the Nats 8-0.

Update II: Ramos hit his second homer of the game, a two-run shot off of Tim Collins in the sixth.

Anthony Rendon with a double off the left field wall in the seventh to end Snell's no-hit bid.

Update III: Snell finished seven innings, allowed no runs on one hit with four walks and 10 strikeouts. He threw 103 pitches, 63 for strikes.

Jake Bauers with an RBI single in the eighth, his fourth hit of the game, a career-high.

After eight innings, the Rays lead the Nats 11-0.

Update IV: The Nats do not score in the ninth despite a two-out single by Juan Soto.

It is the seventh time this season they have been shut out.

Final score: Rays 11, Nats 0.
