Having another chance against Gavin

The Orioles will get another look at hometown righty Gavin Floyd, who held them to two runs over seven innings in a 4-2 victory on Aug. 7. Floyd is 2-1 with a 2.54 ERA lifetime against the Orioles, the team that we'll assume he rooted for as a kid. Nick Markakis is 3-for-10 with two doubles, a homer and three RBIs against Floyd. Felix Pie is 3-for-6. Adam Jones is 2-for-6 with a homer. Brian Roberts is 3-for-14, but two of those hits are home runs. Luke Scott is 2-for-11. I'm starting to wonder whether White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen is trying to talk his way out of Chicago. He's said some outrageous things again this season, staying true to form, and he vented last week after Twins designated hitter Jim Thome beat his former team with a 10th-inning home run. Guillen didn't exactly campaign to keep Thome over the winter. He preferred not to clog the DH slot with a guy who could only run to one base at a time. That's pretty much how the Orioles felt about anyone who couldn't play a position. When Guillen's lack of interest in Thome was brought up after last Tuesday night's defeat, he replied, "If people don't like it, good. They don't like it, they don't have to watch the (expletive) White Sox. Oh, and I got one more year on my contract. Just make sure to tell Jerry Reinsdorf, get it ready, this crazy (expletive) Mexican, it's fine with me. They're going to blame me about one home run, I'll take the blame." Yeah, ownership will be thrilled with that one. Guillen might have one eye - or both of them - on the Marlins job. Thome has become one of baseball's best bargains with 17 home runs in 223 at-bats while having the potential to earn $1.7 million with incentives based on plate appearances. He made $13 million last season. The only teams reportedly interested in Thome over the winter were the Twins, Rays and Tigers.
