In the fourth round... (updated)

The Orioles have selected Auburn left-handed hitting center fielder Trent Mummey in the fourth round. I'll try to dig up more on him later. Update: Mummey was named a 2009 ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division I Gold Glove Award winner after posting a .995 fielding percentage and finishing with seven outfield assists. He committed only one error. Mummey homered, doubled twice and drove in five runs Saturday in Auburn's 17-8 victory over Southern Mississippi. He's batting .366 with 17 homers, 54 RBIs and eight steals this season. I just got off the phone with UCLA baseball coach John Savage, who couldn't believe closer Daniel Klein was still available in the third round. Savage thinks the Orioles got a steal by selecting Klein, whose four-pitch arsenal leads his coach to believe that he could be a starter right away. "He's a legitimate guy, a guy that has four pitches," Savage said. "He's been a closer for us, but he's a legitimate potential starter down the road. He throws a ton of strikes and has an easy delivery." Klein was a highly touted quarterback at Servite, a private school in Anaheim, and he drew the interest of some Pac 10 schools. The Orioles drafted him, but he enrolled at UCLA. "He's just gotten better and better," Savage said. "He's legit. I think he's a late-first or sandwich pick that happened to go in the third round. He's got great makeup. He's an athlete. You guys got a good one in that round. "He doesn't have a huge fastball. It's 90-93. It's a good major league-average fastball. He has a real good changeup. His changeup is probably his best secondary pitch. And he has a good curveball and slider. He's pretty complete. "He's one of those good-looking guys - 6 foot 3, 200 pounds. He's an athlete, man. He's a good pick in that round. He easily could have gone 20th to 50th overall, but he was still available in that round. I think it's a very good choice." Klein underwent shoulder surgery in 2009 that cost him the entire season, but Savage said it was routine. "It wasn't a major surgery," he said. "It was more for the capsule on top of the labrum. There was no tear or anything like that. It was more of a cleanup."
