Lee has MRI on foot (updated)

SARASOTA, Fla. - It's always something. First baseman Derrek Lee fouled a ball off his left foot on the first pitch he saw yesterday from Phillies left-hander Cole Hamels. It didn't start bothering him until he left the ballpark, and he underwent X-rays last night and an MRI at 8 a.m. today that came back clean. Lee was sent for the MRI after one area of the X-ray concerned the doctor, according to manager Buck Showalter. "We dodged a bullet there, it looks like," Showalter said. Lee was scratched from the lineup, but Showalter said the veteran could end up making the trip to Port Charlotte and playing against the Rays. He's waiting to meet with Lee. Jake Fox is starting at first base, but he would move behind the plate if Lee decides to play. It's hard to imagine Lee making the trip after having X-rays and an MRI. The Orioles added minor leaguers Eddie Gamboa, Xavier Avery, Carlos Rojas, Brandon Waring, Kyle Hudson and Sean Gleason for today's game. In other news, left-hander Zach Britton is expected to start Tuesday against the Yankees. Chris Tillman would pitch in a minor league game. Rule 5 pick Adrian Rosario is scheduled to pitch three or four innings today in a minor league game. Jim Johnson will pitch on back-to-back days for the first time. Jeremy Accardo also will pitch. Josh Rupe will pitch in a minor league game Tuesday. The Orioles are stretching him out, though they still envision him working in a long relief role. He's a candidate to make the club. Don't dismiss him this early. More roster cuts are coming in the middle of the week, perhaps after Wednesday night's game in Fort Myers.
