Mancini again chosen AL Comeback Player of the Year

The offseason has left enough room for Trey Mancini to receive another honor.

Mancini is the recipient of the American League's Comeback Player of the Year Award, with Major League Baseball making the announcement tonight.

The award has been presented annually since 2005, with the 30 club beat reporters from MLB.com choosing the winners in each league from an original list of 30 candidates.

Mancini, 27, is the first Orioles player to be honored and he was the obvious selection. Again.

Entering 2021 with questions about his stamina and ability to regain his old form, Mancini played in 147 games to trail only Cedric Mullins (159) and batted .255/.326/.432 with 33 doubles, 21 home runs 71 RBIs and 77 runs scored. His 38 multi-hit games ranked second on the team behind Mullins (46).

Mancini hit his 100th career home run on June 20 against the Blue Jays, making him the fastest player in club history who began his career with Baltimore to reach that milestone - doing it in 531 games.

Among his other highlights was a runner-up finish to the Mets' Pete Alonso in the All-Star Home Run Derby in Colorado. He was the first Orioles participant since Mark Trumbo in 2016 and the 17th overall.

His 59 home runs are the most by an Orioles batter in Home Run Derby history.

Mancini also received the Comeback Player of the Year Award from his peers in the Players Choice Awards and from The Sporting News, which collects votes from players, managers and executives.

In addition, Mancini was chosen as the Orioles' 2021 nominee for the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award.

Giants catcher Buster Posey received the National League's Comeback Player of the Year Award tonight. Posey has retired after a 12-year career.
