More from Showalter

The Orioles have rooms reserved in Cleveland and Chicago for third baseman Manny Machado and shortstop J.J. Hardy, with the hope that both players will avoid the disabled list and be available to play.

Fingers remain crossed.

Machado (right knee) and Hardy (left thumb) underwent MRIs today and team physician Dr. Michael Jacobs will read the results at Camden Yards.

X-rays on the knee were negative, but the Orioles sent Machado for the MRI. He remained in good spirits today.

"He was joking around," Showalter said. "He's speaking very positively. But until you get the doctors to weigh in ... Let the experts do their thing first, as I've learned through the years. I mean, I know how I feel in my gut right now.

"I want to see what they say about J.J. He feels a tad better today, which is a good sign, but I'll feel better when we get through with his MRI, too.

"We obviously haven't DLed anybody yet."

Showalter won't handicap the chances that Machado and Hardy remain on the active roster.

"I don't know yet," he said. "But just because somebody goes on the DL doesn't mean that he's not going to play again this season or he's going to have surgery or this and that. Sometimes, that does clean it up. Right now, we have rooms for both of them in Chicago and Cleveland."

The Orioles most likely have summoned an infielder from Triple-A Norfolk in case he's needed on Wednesday.

Also, Miguel Gonzalez remains scheduled to start for Norfolk on Wednesday night in Buffalo. He could rejoin the Orioles in Chicago and start Aug. 19 against the White Sox.

"He'll throw probably around three innings tomorrow for Norfolk in Buffalo," Showalter said. "If we had to DL somebody, we could bring him back. We're going to let him go. He could still come back."

The Orioles still haven't announced a makeup date for today's postponed game. A doubleheader on Sept. 12 would seem to be the preference with expanded rosters. The Orioles already lost their last off-day with the makeup game in D.C. and they'd probably like to avoid playing on Thursday.

"I look at it from our standpoint and I'm sure the Yankees look at it from their standpoint," Showalter said.

"Obviously, we know that we're going to have roster expansion."

Four of the Orioles' six postponements this season have come at home.
