O'Day goes on DL (plus Orioles lineup)

SAN FRANCISCO - The Orioles placed reliever Darren O'Day on the 15-day disabled list today with a right rotator cuff strain.

Tyler Wilson has been recalled from Triple-A Norfolk to take O'Day's spot on the pitching staff.

O'Day flew back to Baltimore this morning and had his shoulder examined by team orthopedist Dr. Michael Jacobs. Manager Buck Showalter said yesterday that he wouldn't have used O'Day in this series.

This is O'Day's second stint on the disabled list in 2016. He missed seven weeks with a strained right hamstring.

O'Day experienced discomfort in his shoulder in Thursday's game versus the Athletics in Oakland and informed Showalter following a 9-6 win.

O'Day, 33, has gone 3-1 with a 3.95 ERA - 12 earned runs in 27 1/3 innings - three saves, and 33 strikeouts in 30 games with the Orioles this season. He's retired only one batter in two of his last three outings.

Wilson, 26, is 4-6 with a 4.98 ERA in 17 games (13 starts) with the Orioles this season. He was placed on the taxi squad yesterday in case the Orioles decided to put O'Day on the disabled list.

Meanwhile, J.J. Hardy is batting second tonight against Giants left-hander Madison Bumgarner. Chris Davis is playing first base and batting sixth.

Steve Pearce isn't in the lineup.

The Orioles need a win to stay in first place in the American League East. The Blue Jays defeated the Astros 4-2 this afternoon.

Kevin Gausman's 3.64 run support average is the fifth-lowest among qualifying AL starting pitchers this season. He's received one run or leses in eight of his 20 starts this season.

Zach Britton hasn't allowed an earned run in his last 39 innings, the longest stretch since Brad Ziegler started his major league career with a 39-inning streak in 2008 with the Athletics.

Showalter needs one more win for 1,046 in his career, which would tie him with Jimmy Dykes for 27th place.

Due to a scoring change, Manny Machado no longer is credited with an infield hit last night in the fourth inning on the ball that deflected off Giants starter Matt Cain and led to Hyun Soo Kim getting caught in a rundown between second and third. Machado now reaches on a fielder's choice in accordance with rule 9.05(b)(3).

Cain gets an assist and Machado ends up going 1-for-5.
